BANKSY charity print for Japan?, by highinla on Mar 16, 2011 21:54:38 GMT 1, SUGGESTION BOX - If Banksy wants to help out Red Cross and/or any other relief effort program thats concentrating on this disaster in Japan... he should release an open edition screen print and/or one of those 24 hour time-sensitve releases. I would buy one and I'm sure everyone else would pick one (or more) up as well. Its no secrete, Banksy can generate some serious cash... Japan really needs the money, and I need a new Banksy print. I love his work for what it is, so I can care less how many prints exist of the same image... even if its an edition of 1,000,000
EDIT: Your thoughts?

BANKSY charity print for Japan?, by Happy Shopper on Mar 16, 2011 22:08:05 GMT 1, Charity is a personal thing, and it's surprising sometimes what people do and don't support. I'm sure he must be thinking about it. But he didn't do a Haiti print, so whether he will or not... who knows!?

BANKSY charity print for Japan?, by hal9001 on Mar 16, 2011 22:10:41 GMT 1, What? Is an artist supposed to swoop down from the skies and wave a magic wand to alleviate all natural disasters now?
That is our job as citizens of the earth. If you want to help the situation I suggest you join Medicus Sans Frontires and get your ass to the front lines.
Either that or you could continue sitting on that aforementioned ass and make a post on an internet message art board about how your favorite artist should give you a profit opportunity by making a something for you to buy, and then selflessly giving that money to help rebuild Japan.
Is this what you are proposing? Did I read your words correctly? This is what you would like to happen yes?
Please read this little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done
And by the way assuming you want to sell this art for 600 pounds 1million times how is 600million pounds supposed to ameliorate a nuclear disaster in one of the richest most educated and industrialized nations in the world? Do they not have enough Particle Physicists/Nuclear Engineers in Japan?
TELL ME HOW MONEY IS GOING TO HELP SOLVE THIS PROBLEM! LIKE THEY ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING AND TRYING EVERYTHING AT THEIR DISPOSAL TO PREVENT THE CHINA SYNDROME? Japan's 2009 GDP was $5.07 Trillion tell me what 600 million pounds will do?! TELLME

The print would not even need to be printed in advance, as long as people new they had bagged one I'm sure they would wait a while for it.

BANKSY charity print for Japan?, by highinla on Mar 16, 2011 22:19:42 GMT 1, I do agree with you happyshopper, it is a personal gesture... But I strongly believe that as a compassionate human being he should do it, but obviously he's not obligated.
I hate to compare apples to oranges... but whats going on in Japan is way different from what happen in Haiti. This can quickly turn from national disaster to GLOBAL/INTERNATIONAL disaster.

BANKSY charity print for Japan?, by craigf on Mar 16, 2011 22:23:56 GMT 1, I think we can all make a difference without the need for an incentive from Banksy or any other artist. Lots of people are rallying around which is fantastic, whatever anyone is doing to help will make a difference to someone in need. If it's a financial contribution, an offer of physically support or even positive thoughts we need to do what we can rather than ask of others

No, I'm having a great day! I would just like to ask the question why people think the leaders of this world that have nothing to do with natural disasters should be able to solve them, when they are just as able. YOU ARE JUST AS POWERFUL AS BANKSY IN PREVENTING AND ALLEVIATING NATURAL DISASTERS, AND THE MINUTE WE ALL START THINKING THIS WAY THEN AND ONLY THEN DO WE HONOR HIS ART!!!!!!!!
I'd Like to suggest the following link about stars helping situations such as this. www.hulu.com/watch/33851/the-simpsons-sending-our-love

Yeah ok ill give u the bad life if you want! Throwing money at every problem does not make it go away. It makes you feel better from your apartment in L.A. This is a Physics Problem not an Economic One. Do you think that throwing money at the problems in the middle east right now will make them go away? Really your statements are quite myopic. Charity begins with us not our money.

Dude Hal, you got it all twisted... Money doesn't solve the problem, but you cannot argue that it will HELP. I'm not in a position to go yo Japan to start cleaning up the mess with my own hands, but WE are in a position to HELP rescue efforts/crews get there and stay there to (keyword) HELP clean up the mess. None of us have enough power or resources to SOLVE the problem, but just because we cannot solve the problem doesn't mean we cannot HELP.

BANKSY charity print for Japan?, by highinla on Mar 16, 2011 23:04:30 GMT 1, @ George - Ummm, sure... you may not like my comment but its true. When was the last time you donated a large sum of money towards anything at free will? Charity/fundraiser prints work, love it or leave it... don't hate the player, hate the game.
edit: @ Shorty - no one is getting mad, I was simply suggesting a way to raise some REAL money. If you want to argue that Banksy, Tom Cruise, or Jay Z can do more for Japan than me, myself, and I... you are a fool!

Exactly. If people really want to help there's like 20+ places to donate money. Others want something for their donation, which is totally fine, but the artists who donate their art, money, and time and get nothing out of it are donating a lot more. If they don't want to/can't afford to donate all that then I don't see why anyone should have a problem with that

BANKSY charity print for Japan?, by Lunch Special on Mar 17, 2011 3:03:36 GMT 1, I think the reason we expect or hope that the artists do a print release is way more selfish in the thought then not doing anything at all....
If you would spend your money on a print only because the money is going to charity, then your not giving to the charity at all, your giving to get a print....
On the topic, I want every artist to make a print for charity to remind me of the devastation that occurred this past week. Why not encourage people to text redcross to 90999 so we can give without wanting anything in return.
In a perfect world, we would be worrying more about the people and them not having walls to hang up the print we keep asking for...

BANKSY charity print for Japan?, by hal9001 on Mar 17, 2011 4:18:20 GMT 1, Great thoughts on the topic everyone! I want to point out one last thing with regards to our over reliance on "superheroes" aka "celebs" to mop up all the messes for us.
www.nzherald.co.nz/japan-tsunami/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503051&objectid=10712802
The men and women in the story in the above are sacrificing so much.
`They know the dangers of what they are about to do, and do so selflessly. NOT A ONE IS SAYING WHAT ABOUT ME AND MY FAMILY, THEY ARE JUST DOING A JOB AND EXPECTING NOTHING FROM IT NOT EVEN A TEARY EYED REUNION WITH THEIR FAMILY LIKE THE CHILEAN COAL MINERS. (because if they did; well lets face facts here... it wont be as pretty, radiation poisoning takes a lot out of you, they will be puking their guts out for days on end)
My T's and P's are with them and these titans of PHYSICS who will make a difference in this world in this moment and we will sing their praises long after they are gone! They are not waiting around for PARIS HILTON to come give money and wave her magic guitar and make it all go away. NO! They will make a stand, these 50 stare cancer in the face and may pay to the bearer on demand the ultimate price! [/b] [/size]
