Very good question, if it was by any other artist I think people would think at least twice. If it was at the same price as the CYW release most people would go for them just because the profit to be made even if they didn't like it. Others would buy to ensure they have as many banksy prints as possible. if sold at say £2k it would take a lot longer to sell (maybe a full 20 seconds!)
At Market price I would skip this image and spend my hard earned on another piece

I think the clearest point of this was the Banksy - Forgive us our Trespassing & Gagnon - Forgive me my Trespassing
Gagnon did the Image first, then when Banksy did his version people were saying it was his best piece for years and would do anything to own it as a print. Gagnon released his version and it is possibly still available. If Banksy had done a Signed edition of this they would have sold out in seconds and be changing hands for £3k+ for what is basically the exact same image

1. Banksy's was a street piece soley, well placed and executed
2. Gagnon's was a print poorly received as much for the lack of humour and insight, as for the fact it was done by Rene'

Whilst I agree a lot of people would by anything with Banksy's signature... I still think most of us look a little deeper.
When I look at this image, regardless of who did it, I'll think: "Is there anything clever?" "Does it make me smile, think, etc..?" "Would I hang up a print with a child being pushed in a pile of crap?"...
Answer is NO.

Whether you like my placement or insight for that matter, really means nothing. Guess you don't do your homework.
1. Mine was a street piece from 2008 and was never a print.
2. Banksy released the poster "after" - "people" realized he used the same reference I did.
happy new years to all..

And a bit of sublime 'branding'. For there is no other explanation - for the commodity of art the image should be almost everything. When you pay a premium for 'brand' BMW you know you're paying a premium for a good reason over say a a Lada's cost. The comparable isn't transferable in this instance.

Banksy - What if he had released this?, by colinfishwick on Jan 3, 2011 19:15:09 GMT 1, SO YOU ARE SAYING IT IS ALL ABOUT PLACEMENT AND NOT THE IMAGE. I agree placement can be as important as the image but would never put placement first. And no, I wouldn't buy this if Banksy released it.
i'm not going to get embroiled in the Gangon/Banksy debate but placement is integral to the success of any/every street piece.
the composition is what makes or breaks any work of art and there is clear evidence of Banksy recently scouting locations and incorporating a composition to suit (for example the piece on the hotel wall in Exeter), this in itself is hardly groundbreaking in the world of street art but Banksy has always set himself apart with his choice of subject matter relevant to it's environment, a very basic but often overlooked skill on the street IMO.

Banksy - What if he had released this?, by Deleted on Jan 3, 2011 19:50:17 GMT 1, I'll accept that placement is integral to the success (or relevance?) of a street piece but why should, or does, this translate into a print?
Surely when 'moved' the image is lost? When fat frank buys a Choose Your Weapon (or anything else 'urban') isn't the synergy lost when it's displayed in a £10mio house in Belgravia?
Back to the question - I wouldn't buy the initial image, it's awful.

Banksy - What if he had released this?, by snausages on Jan 3, 2011 20:21:59 GMT 1, Crap image weak joke, but you all know that if it was released in an "ultra limited low editions" of 25 in a bazillion different color ways you all would be killing each other to get a hold of it and people would be flipping it for thousands.
I long for the days of old with Banksy. Weird thing is most artists work actually gets better over time. I feel like Banksy was at the top of his game 4-6 years ago and mostly downhill since (particularly with his prints. There are some exceptions like the Pet Shop show and some stuff from Bristol.

Banksy - What if he had released this?, by Deleted on Jan 3, 2011 20:39:44 GMT 1, I'd agree Snaus, in that Banksy's prints have perhaps not progressed (my view) since Trollies / Morons, VLH being the exception. Whilst generically artists work should get better over time reality is that, Banksy is an exceptional talent who was, artistically, at the right place at the right time with the right people.

I agree that I have been somewhat disappointed with some of the recent print releases (since 2008) but this is just one tiny aspect of his work. I completely disagree that he was at the top of his game 4-6 years ago; the Bristol show was the best art show I have been to, Can's was very impressive and a novel concept, his street work in recent years has continued to amaze me, not to mention moving in a new direction and producing a film that could still be nominated for an Oscar. That is not 'going downhill' in my opinion...

Banksy - What if he had released this?, by colinfishwick on Jan 3, 2011 21:44:44 GMT 1, i'll take the last few posts as a whole as i think that's fair, if any of you look back at a large number of Banksy's old prints many of them are badly photoshopped (grannies, napalm, golf sale etc), a large number mean little or nothing in terms of social commentary other than a simple one dimensional pun (pulp fiction, barcode, flying copper, CWSB, donuts).
many other pieces have a quaint subtlety in their message and don't try too hard for attention and therefore IMHO are timeless (WSM, BME, LN, GWB). and then there are the real, hardcore classics. the Banksy's that actually get better over time - happy choppers, love is in the air, any and every rat, Nola, Choose Your Weapon - each of these are very much of their time but also of any time, it's only my opinion but i believe that these works are the high points of Banksy's print output and every one will stand the test of time. some or all of these work better on the street/wall but none lose their meaning in isolation - of course their impact is lessened somewhat but then short of doing a Bankrobber job and taking the wall home with you this is the best we can hope for.
i'd say the best is yet to come from Banksy, by no means is he the finished article yet - plenty of shite still gets through - but he is a far leaner machine in terms out of quality of output than he was 5 years ago, again IMO.

Banksy - What if he had released this?, by snausages on Jan 3, 2011 22:09:25 GMT 1, I know it's all opinion but man I'm really thrown by your bad, ok and good list by Banksy.
CWSB, LN, GWB, LIITA, Happy Choppers, Heavy Weaponry, Queen Vic ... all these are are timeless, why they are is because they ARE so simple and have such a satirical and irreverent bite to (most) of them.
I see none of that in Nola (I can understand the appeal but it's unoriginal - an old and tired joke), Choose Your Weapon (convoluted, only works when you know the story behind it) Donuts, not that great of a joke, NBG is ok but... etc. these are missing that strong instant impact and sarcastic wit like in his best images. ...
