Economics of Printing., by christyben on Jan 4, 2011 12:47:59 GMT 1, I've been doing a bit of gestimating over christmas and would like to know if my figures are way off the mark. I
1. Big Group Model
50 prints (editions of 50) @ ยฃ50 ยฃ50x50x50 = 125,000
Assume artists get 40% thats thousand pounds each or ยฃ50,000 total.
Leaving ยฃ75,000
Print costs, now I am not an expert on this but I am guessing its possible to knock out prints of decent quality at 10 quid cost.
Cost: 25 grand.
10 grand admin and location fee for a weekend exhibition. Paid bar pays for weekend staff and security.
Leaving ยฃ40,000 should you sell all the prints. Which admittedly is unlikely, so probably looking at more like a 20ish grand profit.
(obviously artists only get paid on sales as a percentage, but security, venue hire, staff, print costs all have to be paid up front.
Seems a big risk, but decent sized reward if you've got the contacts.
Feel free to point out any miscalculations as I am literally guessing, but have always been interested.
2. Banksy model.
Guess this must include coas, pest control etc etc, but surely the original pays for all that, or am I wrong?

Economics of Printing., by christyben on Jan 4, 2011 12:56:50 GMT 1, I guess print runs can be smaller but also more expensive to the end user.
Okay Banksy model (based on donuts roughly)
450 each
2 x runs of 450 = 900
900 x 450 = ยฃ405,000
Printing costs (for aguements sake lets say ยฃ20 quid per print) 1,800
Artist Profit 162,000
Website costs and staff costs 30,000
Pest control and database costs 10,000
Clear 201,200 (before tax)

Economics of Printing., by craigf on Jan 4, 2011 13:32:40 GMT 1, Don't forget the sales price includes VAT at 17.5% (then) and now 20%. A ยฃ450 print therefore only nets ยฃ383 per print. Costs net of VAT then come off of this

Economics of Printing., by craigf on Jan 4, 2011 13:35:07 GMT 1, Also what is this for, is it to headline how much profit is to be made? If that's the case you also need to consider what the costs that need to be recovered before a profit is made. If the edition doesn't sell out even though each print made a positive contribution you can still make a sizeable loss

Economics of Printing., by manty on Jan 4, 2011 13:50:10 GMT 1, Plus postage, wastage, customer moans, property, insurance, pension, phone, tea, tubes, marketing, dealing with the artist all sounds like a nightmare to me ;D

Economics of Printing., by manty on Jan 4, 2011 13:54:54 GMT 1, I would guess you could make a profit on a smallish run of say 30 prints at ยฃ50 a pop if you had an FOC forum marketing plan, total sales ยฃ1500, costs including postage and tubes and a few FOC gifts to people that join your mailing list = cost@ยฃ800 Profit ยฃ700
