Art Charity Project - Opinion, Advice, HELP, by Brushstrokes 75 on Dec 15, 2010 21:03:47 GMT 1, I have a charity project for months that is formenting in my mind.
I've been trying to get some opinions from artists mainly. Here what it's all about :
I want to do something that is a little bit different than what we usually see. Often, people may ask artists to donate some of their artwork to raise money for a good cause. I know that a lot of artists are always happy to donate something for a good cause.
This charity would have a double purpose :
- help artists promote their work - raise money for local association.
We all know that big NGO have a lot of money and a lot of money is often lost in the processes. My point is local charity and association not only in developping countries but also in western Europe or North America desperately needs money for important projects (build schools, distribute food... in other words trying to make life better for those in need).
How would we do that?
Instead of continuously asking artists to donate some of their work for charity (what they often do gently!), we would actually prefer working with artists giving them the opportunity to realize prints that they would sell on our behalf.
The proceeds from the sale will go down the following way (once the printing cost would be substracted) : - 45% goes to the artist - 45% of the money raised will be redistributed to local charities worldwide -10% to our charity to develop activities (maybe organize joint shows)
Talking to several artists, this would be not that far from what they could get through a deal with galleries. I would also like to organize trips for artists to go on the local project to see what they were working for.
The organization will be a non-profit organization : no members will get or receive any of the proceeds.
I'm just starting contacting artists to see if the project might be viable,
My plan as well is to start with 2 branches : one in France and one in the UK.
I'm not too familiar with the tax exemption in other countries for charity donation so if anyone knows how it goes down, I'll be interested.
Looking for opinions, advices, help (if anyone wants to give any).
Would as well like to hear from what some artists on the forum have to say.
I'm sorry if the presentation is quite laconic!
Thanks by advance for all your thoughts!

Art Charity Project - Opinion, Advice, HELP, by mmmike on Dec 15, 2010 21:24:12 GMT 1, It would be great if you could get this going. I would warn you by saying it sounds like you would be doing the role of a gallery with a lot less revenue.
I'm not an expert but as I understand it a gallery will tend to get around 50%. Sounds like a lot but so many of them fail to earn a profit at that rate.
You will need to promote the artist / work, handle transactions, website, fund the charities all for 10% of sales.
Amazing if you can do it but it might be tough.

Art Charity Project - Opinion, Advice, HELP, by Brushstrokes 75 on Dec 15, 2010 21:33:55 GMT 1, Plan is to fund charities for with 45% of the sales.
Can do a partnership with a gallery to host a show I guess. It's always a good marketing plan for them.
Agree for the rest but I hope that I won't be doing all this alone. I hope that some charitable soul could help me. How many people on here are graphic designer or web designer?
It's not a one man thing hopefully or I will die doing this.
The main point is really helping local associations or charities. Just helping them through art! The point of all this is that in the end there's no revenue!

Art Charity Project - Opinion, Advice, HELP, by manty on Dec 15, 2010 21:44:56 GMT 1, I am going to sound like a real neg head, but having seen these things being tried before there is a lot of work involved.
I would imagine even if its for a charity that everyone would want to support the key would be in able to get 'hot artists' so you could guarantee you could cover the costs of the print run and make a surplus from it to donate.
HarveyN would be good to contact as he helped organize the Mercy appeal on here a few years back that Beejoir had set up, and he would be able to give you some info on the time ect. that he put in for a very well run charity appeal

Art Charity Project - Opinion, Advice, HELP, by Brushstrokes 75 on Dec 16, 2010 22:49:07 GMT 1, Thanks manty & mmike. Appreciate the opinions and advices.
I'm still thinking about this. I started my own business. So I work from home and have a lot of spare time to kill.
I've already been in a non lucrative organization (when I was in Business School) managing about 150 000 euros/year.
The thing is I know how the system works in France as I already went through all this during 2 years.
You're right manty the whole point is to secure kind of hot or mainstream artists to support the costs! That was actually the plan. I'm currently enquiring about artists or general public to see how all this could this go.
It would be nice as well if any artist on this board could give his opinion here or via PM!
