Has urban art lost its wow factor?, by jones27 on Aug 5, 2010 0:49:01 GMT 1, Take a walk down the east end of London and youll discover Eines work is as 'urban' as it gets.
There are no new imagery trends like angels or war etc. Personally I prefer slightly more conceptual stuff and am interested in seeing artists develop past stencils and experiment with different mediums.

Has urban art lost its wow factor?, by Winter on Aug 5, 2010 7:13:21 GMT 1, Does seem quie at the moment. Hopefully all the big names are busy working towards new shows. That said, no mention of any big shows in the near future.

Some of the ORIGINAL POW chaps are starting to get a lot more acclaim of late, and are all selling out editions now. The obvious examples being Invader, Eine and Eelus. I'm just gonna start buying up Vaucher and Fowler in the hope that this happens to them too!!!

Yeah, I think here we get to see so much work by so many Artists, not all of it good that we maybe lose focus on the great work and shows of the BIG name Artists.

At lot of artists are producing some amazing work at present and pushing boundaries. Some amazing shows from Roa, C215, Byroglyphics, McLauchlan, Polly Morgan and Ian Francis so far this year and that's just the UK ones. And there is plenty to come with Denning at St. Martin's Crypt, Bast London show and hopefully Paul Insect If anything I would say a lot of the dross has disappeared and artists are having to up their game for people to part with their hard-earned.

If your using print releases as a guide then I think you're right. But this should never be about prints If you look at the recent work done by Blu, Os Gemeos, that at Fame Festival, and many others, then it still continues to amaze me. This is external work that doesn't translate to a print, and I would never want it to be about a flat piece of paper I can try and purchase. A print is ancillary and for me a reminder of work seen in situ; not work created for financial gain, which is where we're at now with too many 'artists'.
We all move on, which is how it should be.

I'm with Sean on this matter. There's some amazing boundary pushing work being painted on walls at the minute.

Thank you.
Out of extremity comes the norm. What has been going on for some time has now reached the mainstream, and with that comes mass consumption for general taste. But it also brings in newcomers who have no understanding what it is all about. For a comparison think of punk and its dilution into the mainstream, and where we are now; or any rebellious music movement for that matter. It loses its initial burst of energy and rebellion the longer it goes on. But it has to evolve; and the same is true of urban art. The original pioneers are moving it forward, as it should be, leaving behind second and third rate imitators.
Music as a form of protest or rebellion has long since lost its impact. There is still great music being made but it no longer has the necessary leaders. Those influenced by punk, rave, hip-hop and all those other creative outlets have moved on into other areas. There is some fantastic work being produced throughout this country, not just in urban art, but in photography, theatre, puppetry. Look at Mutate Britain, the White Cross Street Party; while all having to be licensed and approved by local authorities they are the nature successors to gigs - celebrations of an independent spirit and culture which died a long time ago in music. Just look at how bland going to see bands are these days - it's been hijacked by the corporate world.

You only have to take a look at the work at the recent viva la revolution and come as you are at prism to see this.

Has urban art lost its wow factor?, by meatbag on Aug 6, 2010 2:15:55 GMT 1, Although there seems to be many new artists trying to exploit the popularity, most of the pioneers have really been stepping up their work clearly separating themselves from the pack. I've never been more into things and the recent book Beyond The Street was pretty inspiring.

And fusions and crossovers from various roots and streams, classics, foto, pop and contemp now putting urban art onto it bringing of course various results. Some of them are poor, some of them are just in the right place at the right time (sorry to name MBW), and a few are doing a great work and going their very own spectacular way. Im happy to care about art and happy to see what's coming up next.
