id-iom commission process..., by idiom on Jul 23, 2010 16:42:23 GMT 1, Someone was asking us yesterday about whether we do commissions and how we go about doing them so i thought the best idea was to give an example in case anyone was interested in seeing the process...
Step 1 - Get the client to complete our patented questionnaire so we can get a feel for their likes/dislikes and requirements. If possible we would also have a chat/drink with them to further understand what kind of thing they are after and try to convince them to buy something bigger!
After completion this is what the typical questionnaire looks like (although we usually ask that they fill them in by hand as it gives us more amusement when reading it...)
The completed questionnaire: page 1
page 2
page 3
page 4
page 5
Step 2 - After absorbing the info in the questionnaire and knocking various ideas around between us it inevitably goes on the back burner whilst we try and work which (if any) ideas are good enough to be taken further...
A bit more drunken brainstorming eventually led to the idea of the artwork being a playable (albeit almost impossible) board game which we would paint on canvas (rather than stencil) and then have set into a table. We got in touch with a friend who works as a chippy and got him to create a bespoke table for us that we could set the 1m x 1m canvas into. Once the initial idea is nailed it tends to come together quite quickly from there. It was basically to be a twisted karmic version of the Game of Lifeโฆ
This is the digital version of what we came up with:
Digital design
From there it was just a matter of painting the canvas up. After copious layers of acrylic (at this point I was cursing myself for not using stencils and spraypaint!) we eventually finished the canvas and awaited delivery of our table in order to complete our brand new piece of art/furniture.
The โLet It Rideโ table was definitely one of my favourite commissions. It is named after an 80's comedy featuring Richard Dreyfuss ( it only gets a 6.3 on IMDB but is well worth a watch!) and the game is almost impossible to complete successfully (much like life)
Final piece
So that is how we work and how we came up with this particular piece.
Cheers
