Vandalog - Art or Advert?, by hanky on Mar 5, 2010 11:06:20 GMT 1, Has anyone read this latest in Vandalog
blog.vandalog.com/2010/03/banksy-art-or-advert/
Has Banksy crossed the line to where his work not dissimilar to the advertising hoardings for brand products such as Oil Companies or luxury goods which in the past we have lambasted and manipulated via the spray can to try and expose the public's naivety. Is as Robbo and others contest Banksy himself now fair game? What are your thoughts

Vandalog - Art or Advert?, by adewilliams on Mar 5, 2010 11:09:33 GMT 1, "The people who truly deface our neighbourhoods are the companies that scrawl their giant slogans across buildings and buses trying to make us feel inadequate unless we buy their stuff. They expect to be able to shout their message in your face from every available surface but youโre never allowed to answer back. "
I say its an ad but it's quite a cool ad.

Vandalog - Art or Advert?, by twist65 on Mar 5, 2010 11:38:50 GMT 1, yes great article that. How do you class the 3d glasses rats at Sundance? I suppose they're only adverts if you're aware of the film and if not then street art?

The way I see the Sundance pieces are that those (as well as most of Banksy's or any other street artist's outdoor work) are advertisements, but that the advertisement component is secondary. They can be appreciated as art if you've never heard of the film or Banksy in general, but if you have heard of him, they are both art and an advertisement. But that's the nature of street art. The difference here is that his billboard on Portobello Road is IMHO purely an advertisement and can't be appreciated separately as a work of art (unless you are aware of Banksy already and aware of his former opposition to advertisements, in which case maybe you could see it as a more conceptual piece of him poking fun at himself or whatever, but that requires a lot of prior knowledge about Banksy, so it is clearly primarily an ad).
