Is anything original anymore???, by schlomo on Feb 8, 2010 14:38:50 GMT 1, Been having this conversation at work today after finding a silversmiths makers mark from 1720 which is identical to the Chanel logo, interesting stuff, although rather obviously just a coincidence rather than Chanel using his mark, he was an unknown silversmith, name of Christopher Canner II for anyone who's interested.....
Anyways, the discussion is interesting but we tend to talk about silver and silver styles here, so thought i would throw it to the forum.
Does anything new today have any originality? Most things we can do today have been done before, is there anyone that is totally unique in this scene?? Obviously Banksy is considered the top artist in the scene at the mo, but he wasn't the first, and isn't the last, so is he unique?? Is anything original anymore???
discuss. (and yes, once more i'm bored at work).....

Is anything original anymore???, by snausages on Feb 8, 2010 19:38:05 GMT 1, I went to see this show and without knowing the curatorial thought behind it, I can't say that I left thinking about originality. Don't really think the show is that great myself except for 1 or 2 artists. But I saw this article about the show and it has a thought worth considering.
"Spontaneous Generation" at Zach Feuer Gallery, 530 West 24th Street, on view through March 13, opening Friday, Feb. 5, 6 - 8 p.m.
Curated by Meredith Darrow, this group show tackles a subject on many people's minds โโโโโ is it possible to come up with something that's actually artistically original? Arthur Danto crankily says no, but perhaps the abstract artists included here โ from Sarah Braman and Alistair Frost to Lynda Benglis and Ken Price (who also has a show opening at Matthew Marks Friday) โ can suggest a new approach to novelty that arises from a perspectival shift. That is, if something that's been done before arises organically from their practice, can't it then be said to be original in some way? It'll be interesting to see if the work actually prompts such thinking in this show, which was inspired by Borges but owes no little debt to Duchamp.

I had a similar discussion with friends about art movements i.e. how do you create a new art movment. Tricky to answer but conceptually may be a starting point.

Hard to articulate but I don't mean what we know as conceptual art. Hopefully someone may be able to expand.

Is anything original anymore???, by afroken on Feb 9, 2010 0:02:09 GMT 1, There's a guy who shows up at all the openings at White Cube in Hoxton Square. He screams and shouts and then pulls down his pants, sticks his hand up his arse and pulls it out covered in shit. It's some kind of protest art apparently. That's pretty original.

Mad people have been throwing their own s**t around forever.
Calling it art may well be original though...should we refer to this new school as the bowel movement?

Is anything original anymore???, by snausages on Feb 9, 2010 0:23:35 GMT 1, It's easy to say nothing is original anymore, but the fact is everything is original. But "originality" is more interesting when people aren't "trying" to be original, more when people do what's natural to them. But it's a murky debate because originality doesn't necessarily mean innovative like is often implied.
I think originality and new movements have to do with the collective unconscious of the time - that springs forth from social and environmental factors. Although art now may be linked to that which came before, the authenticity and originality is when it comes naturally from within (individual or societal), regardless of what may or may not have happened in the past.
