Displaying work at a gallery - Fees, by snausages on Nov 5, 2009 17:16:47 GMT 1, 30% is a low commission for a gallery so perhaps asking a ยฃ5 fee is a way to balance that. ยฃ5 isn't all that much so it doesn't sound like they're out to scam you or that it would undermine your art imo, just a way to offset costs I assume. Paying a grand to put on your own show that would be weird, although some people have done it. But in all, it's your decision.

Displaying work at a gallery - Fees, by bazzj04 on Nov 5, 2009 17:27:27 GMT 1, They want ยฃ5 per piece which I thought was very reasonable then they want a commision if sold, think it was 30%. Bit worried though as stuff I saw in the gallery was priced up at absolute silly money compared to what mine is probably gonna be priced at. When I submitted the peices I put on the form no value and wrote price it up yourselves and if sold give the money to charity so I dont even know what to price them at. It will be interesting to see what they sell for in the gallery considering I cant even sell them at cost online. Im wondering if they are gonna price the tesco notes at ยฃ10, if thats the case cant wait to sell a zimbadboy
Just went onto your site, i think you must have had a sudden serge to it , as it would not load for a while, anyway
I like your stuff man good concepts , hopefully it all goes well for you ,,

good luck with it

Displaying work at a gallery - Fees, by Cedric Mnich on Nov 6, 2009 17:22:11 GMT 1, 5ยฃ is not a big deal from my point of view. It will give your art some visibility and it should not be neglected. 30% is a decent commission it is more often 50%. I think I am the one who told you not to pay to be displayed and it undermines your art but 5$ is not a big deal. It's not like you would be asked for 300 GBP to display the same value amount of Art... ;-)

Displaying work at a gallery - Fees, by mred on Nov 7, 2009 6:47:03 GMT 1, The other side of this is fact when people go into galleries and see art priced for big money they think artist is a lucky lad or lady. Was reading on facebook thread where well know academy was claiming "'The money from works sold at the ****** goes directly back to the artists with a small commission to the *******". An artist who had had dealings with said academy said commission was actually 50% and went on to say "When you look at a work for ยฃ1200 it sounds a fair bit, but when you deduct the frame (ยฃ100 - ยฃ250), the commission (ยฃ600), the entry fee (ยฃ25) and the materials (ยฃ100) - does that really pay for one month skilled work - I don't think so! Better off serving burgers at Mcdonalds... and that's if it sells !". As I know the work of this artist I for one hope he does not start serving burgers.
IMHO artists might be better of hoping their work does not sell during exhibitions but sells direct outside and generates lots of interest which you can deal with direct. Also galleries should be more transparent with their fees i.e. let buyers know their cut.
Reading back a bit off thread, sorry but hopefully interesting to a few

Displaying work at a gallery - Fees, by hero on Nov 7, 2009 16:59:10 GMT 1, to be honest, its definitely not worth paying the 5 pounds per piece unless the gallery is well placed and has a large client base, especially as they are taking a commission on the piece, you would be better off finding a gallery owner who is really passionate about your work, and really likes what you are doing, and getting them to sell it around
my general advice would be do not get involved with any online only galleries, only ones with a physical space as the online ones do not get nearly as much trade for the same commission rates; big cartel does the same job

Hero, can I ask what this information is based on or is it just your opinion?
When I ran a physical space 90% of our revenue came from online sales. I'm not saying this is the same for all galleries but it was certainly the case with ours. Our gallery was simply an exhibition space and promotional tool for the online store. Thus it wasn't long before we closed it, massively reduced our overheads and purely traded online.
We continued to charge the same commission rate as even online galleries aren't cheap to operate/promote. And yes, our profit margin increased but this allowed us to reinvest it back into the site and our artists. Our trade actually increased while charging the same commission rate. Thus winners all round!!!
