Name your favorite Living Non-Urban Artists, by James Smith 77 on Oct 27, 2009 17:30:02 GMT 1, I have recently been very interested in the art being produced outside of the "Urban Art/Graffiti/Street Art Movement". So I am curious to know what artists people are into?
Name yours.
Artists must be living and not included in the "Urban Art/Graffiti/Street Art Movement" genre.
Mine are (in no particular order):
- Dan Colen - Ahmed Alsoudani - Kara Walker - Kristin Baker - Nate Lowman - Ryan Trecartin - Julie Mehretu - Robert Longo

I'd like to add Zaha Hadid as well, although an architect her buildings are stunning and works of art in themselves imo.

Name your favorite Living Non-Urban Artists, by artstylee on Oct 27, 2009 20:18:40 GMT 1, the forum is by the "URBAN ART Assocication"
this thread goes against everything the site stands for, &
begs the question "Whats is Urban Art?".......ah ha.... now discuss amongst yourselfs for pages.
Matt Small is not Urban(as he doesnt get up on the streets from what I've seen), only thing making him Urban is that he's black and on BRP.
But is he an Urban Artist?

Where does being black have any relevance to being urban, and no he's not really urban, he's just been kind of put into the urban criteria due to BRP having a lot of urban artists and that the group shows BRP have, there's normally always a Matt Small piece there, im guessing thats why.

Name your favorite Living Non-Urban Artists, by jamesreeve5 on Oct 27, 2009 21:25:37 GMT 1, Defining "urban art" is a bit tricky. Unfortunately, I think "Urban Art" has come to be defined more by what gallery represents the artist more than anything else. When just the work is examined, I would place Dan Colen in Urban Art and Matt Small out of Urban Art. And then there are the artists like Mark Flood, Larry Clark, and Raymond Pettibon... 2 godfathers of 80's hardcore and skateboarder culture, and one director of a movie that would come to define contemporary urban culture... where do they go? Is Damien Hirst Urban? Is Murakami Urban?
Aside from these inherent problems, here is my list of 10 (a few greats and a few personals):
-Mark Flood -Cory Arcangel -Banks Violette -Kristen Baker -Raymond Pettibon -Richard Prince -Tom Sachs -Teresa Margolles -Bruce Nauman -Leigh LeDare -Dan Colen

urban music, urban clothes, or an urban attitude certainly wouldn't mean "non black" music, or clothes or attitude. urban means street ghetto stuff. I'm thinking black music if I'm thinking urban music. as would 99.9% of other people. (or maybee mexican or asian nowadays)
but yeah urban in the context of art would mean "on the streets" funny how urban makes you think differently given the noun that follows.
& Yeah I don't think he's(matt small's) an urban artist either. more of a studio/illustration type artist.

Name your favorite Living Non-Urban Artists, by Deleted on Oct 28, 2009 8:51:23 GMT 1, I would consider Maarten Baas more as a designer than an artist... He just won a price for his clock project (really cool, you should see this: , people are actually using this as a clock!)
I think that's also a more interesting debate... where does design stop and when do we call it art

Personally, I don't recognize a difference and refer to people like Ron Arad, Newson, Baas, Wanders, etc. as artists. Massively undervalued artists.

I partially agree with you. But there is a difference for me, designers always have 'functionallity' in the back of their head.. the way they handle this, is an absolute art! And there is a big difference in their education. designers are very well trained in product development, know their maths and physics that are involved in making the products (industrial design), where artist are triggered to explore their own creativity and improve their skills..
