My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by Silentbill on Oct 8, 2009 9:39:43 GMT 1, Ive personally experienced and also read a lot of ppl complaining of the way prints are released.
The waiting in lines only to be sold out before you reach the front, knowing you should have well have been in with a chance of a print. Submitting an entry to an email lottery, not winning then seeing 50 prints on ebay.
I came up with an idea that would make it better/fairer which I posted in the thread below:
urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?board=artwork&action=display&thread=40755
(At that thread scroll slightly to see the Banksy themed card)
As I have explained within that thread a scratchcard concept could be used by any of the more famous artists. This would act threefold.
A more fairer and exciting chance to get a print, the winning tickets have the option of buying the print.
The profits of the tickets could be donated to charity
The ticket gives the chance of fans to own an affordable piece designed by they artist .
I submitted the idea to Banksy's PR and POW but nowt has came of it. What do others think of the idea?

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by bigtlt on Oct 8, 2009 12:42:59 GMT 1, As I said in the last thread, I think its a great idea, and if people agree and can put enough good comments think it would be a good idea to send a link to this thread over to POW or wherever. I'm sure if POW thought enough people on the likes of these forums would be willing to buy the cards with proceeds going to charity rather than a lottery that favours the flippers, they would consider taking this idea up.

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by amsterdam9697 on Oct 9, 2009 0:22:26 GMT 1, I would much rather do this than send in my email address... and wonder for the next couple of weeks if I spelled the address correctly... and then never hear back from POW if they have your email on record when you check after the lottery to see if you sent them the correct address... and then seeing 50+ appear on the 'Bay... Still not sure if I should re-submit my email when the next lottery comes about as I don't want to get disqualified for entering the lottery twice... Christ, all I want is 1 signed Banksy at cost... Is that too much to ask? ;D
Brilliant idea, BTW...

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by Silentbill on Oct 9, 2009 11:36:44 GMT 1, Thanks for the feedback fellas, I only wished more would agree and post here so perhaps we could get something done about the print release. I assumed loads on this forum would have been up for the idea.
Being relatively new to Banksy Ive only been a fan since one print release and feel a bit sore about the amount that have passed hands on ebay.
Not only that we could own an affordable piece to treasure if it was implemented, the little things are what brings the joy to me, as silly as it seems Ive been chasing a Di Faced as my Banksy Holy Grail since becoming a fan.

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by Happy Shopper on Oct 9, 2009 12:14:53 GMT 1, I can see a problem. How many scratch cards do you print? If they don't all sell, then winning tickets could be left unsold. POW would have to know which were the winning tickets and make sure they got into the right hands (or at least someone's hands!) Also, this is the same as lottery tickets at the POW open day anyway!

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by Silentbill on Oct 9, 2009 12:37:49 GMT 1, There would never be no unsold tickets. This could be done a number of ways as the idea is really simple. One way could be there is a set closing date for entries and 500 winning tickets are pre printed . Upon closing date x amount of losing tickets (number of entries) - (minus) 500 the winning tickets are printed. The winning tickets numbered, randomly assigned to people and posted, the rest posted to other entrants.
Even the losers wont complain because they would then own a Banksy desiged item at an affordable price and knowing the money they have spent has gone to a good cause.
This may deter flippers also, if it doesnt then at least some of them may have to have forked out a lot of ยฃยฃ buying tickets.

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by achtungbono on Oct 20, 2009 9:56:21 GMT 1, dont you think that the publicity & reaction generated by the bun fight isnt a powerful marketing tool for POW et al ?
Consider the Tom Sawyer effect " ...โTom had discovered a great law of human action, without knowing itโnamely, that in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain.โ
a lottery via email encourages the population of a mailing list of the "right" market for POW - this is valuable for the continuation of the business as a whole, not just for the Banksy output
POW isnt a charidee - its a business - there is little to gain by making a change such as this proposal

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 20, 2009 16:49:10 GMT 1, I think the cards look GREAT and are a nice, creative idea, but I cannot think of any significant reason behind using them for releases. IMO, they may just as well ask people to submit a quid or two for each entry (or a fiver or even a much higher amount) and set a limit per person, just as they did at the open day. However, the problem with these systems is that if you're not UK based, you're out of it.
Much better off doing this type of thing online imo (not that I'm biased or anything!!!) to get everyone in on it and raise even more cash for the said cause - thus still using the flippers' greed and everyone's enthusiasm for Banksy's work to benefit the needy as you suggested, but without the added limitations of cards, tickets, queues etc.
The bottom line is that the majority of people will be frustrated regardless of how prints are released and as his fame and secondary market values rise, evermore flippers will be trying to get in on the action. These have become facts of life for all people trying to buy Banksy prints and no amount of scratch cards or alternative sales systems will change it imo. Sorry to seem negative, but trying to be realistic. I doubt there's anyone in the forum who can't share your frustration in missing out on the release, however I have to say that the worst release for me was VLH, which I really loved but was never given a chance to buy, as it was a raffle system similar to yours.
These prints do very well for POW and any charities that Banksy chooses to support when he does so and I can't really see the practical benefit to anyone involved of bringing scratch cards in, beyond adding a novelty factor.

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by grantb on Oct 20, 2009 17:00:22 GMT 1, you buy the tickets, the numbers get posted up on there site, you then contact pow accordingly.
however there will never be a fair way as there will be people who wont get one.
the only way is to put a 5 minute time limit. that would be interesting.

a lottery via email encourages the population of a mailing list of the "right" market for POW - this is valuable for the continuation of the business as a whole, not just for the Banksy output POW isnt a charidee - its a business - there is little to gain by making a change such as this proposal
Firstly, thanks for your input, however, they could still retain their mailing list via this system, I cant see how you came to the conclusion that they couldnt. Secondly, the charity thing was just a suggestion, they could keep all the profits involved if they wished.
I think that the affordable Banksy designed item would generate a hell of a lot more PR for POW than the negative aspect that the email lottery does.
HeavyConsumer, yeah your right about the novelty factor. Your suggestion that they could just ask ppl to put in a quid or two to same effect is forgetting that the scratchcard option would allow people to purchase an affordable Banksy designed item whereas your quid or two leaves people empty handed.

I think that's a terrible idea, can you imagine how much whining there'd be about time-zones, people being at work etc etc....?
This is an old and very repetitive debate, which is all a bit of a mute point now imo. POW have multiple ways which already seem to work perfectly well for them (speaking of which, what other online gallery has ever bothered to develop a cart system capable of handling the demands of the most popular prints?!). I can't imagine why they'd want to experiment with more new ideas and I don't see anything very wrong with their existing methods. They'll never manage to get a print to everyone who wants one, they'll never eliminate flipping totally (although I wouldn't pay too much attention to the initial ebay results!) and people will always moan, but the system is already working as well as we could hope for imho.
Silent Bill...... People complain after every release and the one thing all the recent releases have in common, is that the people who complain are generally the ones who didn't score the print or the greedy people who wish they could get more than 1 to flip . Make of that what you will, but the systems POW use have worked perfectly well for the past couple of years (since Trolleys). Better luck landing one next time anyway. It's amazing how the euphoria of scoring the print erases all problems with the release system! ;D

Yes, an oversight indeed, sorry! Good point. Although I'm not sure where you get the idea that the email lottery generates negative press for them. They've previously gone to the effort of developing a website that copes with the insane traffic of Banksy releases before resorting to that system which also worked great and trust me, many people who didn't score the prints still complained about the system. POW can't win and if they did it your way, people would still complain about it. That's the nature of the beast. It's still cool to see those scratch-cards and I think they're a very creative and clever idea. Perhaps you can develop it into something yourself - some type of charity fund-raiser or maybe a Silent Bill Benevolent Fund project!

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 20, 2009 17:56:36 GMT 1, SB - I have another question for you.... Who says that Banksy would be interested in investing his time in production of said affordable items to benefit his print buyers anyway? He already sells all his prints well below the market value!!!

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by Silentbill on Oct 20, 2009 18:05:13 GMT 1, I see Banksy as the peoples artist, the peoples voice etc just thought id throw my suggestion out there. I originally made it for my kid but then had the idea of how it could be put to use. My one thing that Im buzzing off about the whole idea was that I got a personal email from Banksy about it which meant more to me than it actaully being used.

obviously to let everyone know in advance. if you cant be at a computer with like 3 days notice then tough ? they could do 5 minute limit for uk orders then 5 limit for worldwide
but to be honest i hate the idea of a time limit as the edition numbers would be stupid.

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by daz205 on Oct 20, 2009 19:22:01 GMT 1, 1miliion scratch cards with only 1 prize of a great og (ie. monkey parliment or a banksy/hirst) however much per ticket, no time limit. Pow can keep email addys from online ordering. I'd buy a few on release and prob every month until a winner was announced

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 21, 2009 0:39:49 GMT 1, Don't reckon it can be avoided Ross, but I have a hunch that of those prints flipped before they were shipped from POW, not many of those sales completed.
As I said above, I think that as Banksy's fame and popularity continue to grow, so will secondary market values in the main and flippers are gonna be hard to avoid. Can they blacklist the email addresses and/or IP addresses used to buy the prints they know have already been sold? Yes, perhaps they can, but I'm not sure how much of a real impact that is likely to have.
On another note I know they said that email addresses entered would remain on file for future releases, but I don't think we should take anything for granted about the next release (specifically) as such. Speaking of which, what on earth ever happened to the remaining LA prints? It can all be quite unpredictable at times, so best to just go with the flow as it's clear they do what they can.

My Idea For A Fairer/Better Way To Release Prints, by bazzj04 on Oct 21, 2009 14:41:11 GMT 1, Sorry for that noob question but what is POW ?
