What does it take to be an artist?, by daz205 on Sept 25, 2009 20:06:53 GMT 1, I know I'll be hated and flames for this, but it is to provoke discussion and no offence is ment.
What does it take to be an artist? Skills honed through art school, years studying the masters and various styles throughout the ages? An idea and the ability to carry out your vision, even if it's not you that produces the final piece ala hirst, banksy, even micheal Angelo ? Or is it just plain old publicity, propaganda and the will to succeed?
Hopefully this will generate discussion and not hate.

What does it take to be an artist?, by elwheel on Sept 25, 2009 20:50:46 GMT 1, There are only two things it takes to be an artist.
1. You must declare/accept/define that you are an artist 2. You must declare/accept/define that your creations/outputs are art
Thats it in a nutshell.

What does it take to be an artist?, by Michael Jacob on Sept 25, 2009 20:51:33 GMT 1, ability to handle rejection.
The best part of art is that anyone can do it. Heres my humorous viewpoint. Art is what you show your mom. Your mom will love everything you do. Take that same piece of art and let the public critic it... thats when you become an artist.
ps another perspective... you become an artist when someone will spend their hard earned money on your art.

That must be the lowest of priorities for a real artist! (the kind of artist that only produce number 1 prints ofcourse!)

What does it take to be an artist?, by Oliver Winconek on Sept 25, 2009 21:28:51 GMT 1, Really don't think it matters about qualifications, you've either got it or you haven't, sure, Artistic skills can be nurtured and taught to some extent but that doesn't make you an Artist. Also depends what you mean by Artist? Do you mean to be a successful Artist or just on a basic level? If the latter is the case then really anyone can call themselves one

What does it take to be an artist?, by monkeyballs on Sept 25, 2009 22:01:43 GMT 1, if you have a desire to create, you are an artist. Whether you can actually create what's in your mind directly relates to how frustrated an artist you are.

What does it take to be an artist?, by Karl Read on Sept 26, 2009 10:31:56 GMT 1, IMO. Anyone can be an artist, it's not about money or fame. It's something you feel compelled to do for the love of creating. Simple as that! The question that needs to be asked is what makes a successful artist? Now that could be measured by a number of factors.

Thats it really.

but to be a better artist you need the above and a camera, take a picture of the original and sell 100 prints of the photo for ยฃ35 each that will then make the original worth ยฃ1000

Wow, now thats a hard question, an answer that you could probably keep adding to as well. I guess you have to define what makes an artist successful too? One that has mass fame and fortune? Or just someone who is making a steady living out of their passion? Lets not forget all those brilliant artists that didnt get any recognition untill they died. I guess for me what makes an artist successful, is someone who can make a living from their art.
When you start looking at artists that succeed on a much bigger scale, it seams to be those that follow what they really believe in and what "they" want to create. Take the urban/street art (whatever) you want to call it scene, the guys that are doing well are the ones that have their own original style. Yes i realise that they too have had significant influences to their work from other artists but they are the ones that are succesful. There are a bunch of artists in this scence that are good but they are never are gonna make it big because they are just a weaker or more watered down version from someone else, until they find their own way of course.
I think hype (PR), what gallery they are signed up to, even secondary market sales can have an effect on their perception in the public eye. I guess good artists can come up with a unique style, angle, perspective, humour, subject matter, composistion etc etc etc without being seen as churning out the "same old" stuff constantly. Well thats my take on it a little and im sure il think of something else in a minute but im sure you guys can explain it better than me anyway.

What does it take to be an artist?, by moleman on Sept 26, 2009 15:47:38 GMT 1, i got asked to make a bit for a friends daughter which i did to the best of my ability. I made a pecil sketch on canvas now although it looked good (to me) it was not my style. Unfortunatly for me my skills are chaos and breacking hings and mess. However i see good art as a detailed picture with skill and depth so i dont make the art i want to make i make the art i tink i should or would like to make. Inevitably i fail because im not a good enough artist to make a replete or an adam smiith. However part 2 i have never tried to make a remi rough or a rourke splatter picture (which maybe very hard) but deep down i love them but that piece of me that buys art wants to buy some thing that took time and looks like some thing i could not match. I think thats why when i see a broks leer piece i think what the fuck is that all about but at the end of the day they sell for more than my ยฃ5 molemans.

What does it take to be an artist?, by jamieshaw on Sept 27, 2009 20:12:14 GMT 1, I don't have a choice, if I don't paint I get the shakes, I get depressed, lazy, ignorant... literally!
but I think everyone has the choice to be an artist if they want. It just takes a little sincerity.
or as James Baker said, integrity!
Otherwise you'll be lost in the masses and never really experience those brilliant moments in the depths of the night where you're literally thinking in paint, no words just colours and textures and shapes and movement, and it makes the most profound sense you'll ever know.
