"Works by Banksy, the elusive graffiti artist, are off 40 to 50 per cent; later pieces by Damien Hirst have fallen 30 to 35 per cent; and less exceptional examples from Warhol have dropped 25 to 30 per cent while his more sought-after works are down 10 per cent."

So what!!! Come on - this is not an investment forum. This only matters if you buy art just as an investment. Most people on here, I think, buy the art they love - with maybe a very few exceptions. And - is a drop in value really news to anyone here?! .....

"Bankers bone up on Banksy", by raiden on Sept 19, 2009 0:32:04 GMT 1, Oh come on, its fun to talk prices.
There hasn't been a good discussion on prices and trends for a while on this board - and frankly, I like the occasional speculative post of "whose prices are going to go up next." It adds an added dimension to the collecting world.
I buy art I love, but very seldom will I pull the trigger on something if it doesn't make economic sense as well.

"Bankers bone up on Banksy", by Simococo on Sept 19, 2009 7:48:43 GMT 1, i am suprised about Banksy's recent prices. The show at the Bristol museum is evidence enough about his popularity so the The CWSB not selling at Christies (I appreciate it wasn't in the strongest of sales but is is one of his best images to date) seemed strange as I don't think the reserve was too agrresive.

"Bankers bone up on Banksy", by craigf on Sept 19, 2009 9:23:14 GMT 1, The rarity of CWSB is one thing that makes it desirable, but you've hit the nail on the head re the print quality.

"Bankers bone up on Banksy", by chiefhk on Sept 19, 2009 10:30:12 GMT 1, I'm curious to find out if most who buy art here are not concerned about the potential economic value of their "investment"? I guess I'm not so lucky to be able to pony up thousands of dollars for work without considering the possibility of selling it for a profit in the future.

"Bankers bone up on Banksy", by craigf on Sept 19, 2009 15:42:25 GMT 1, If your looking for a solid investment with a guaranteed return you need to go to put your money in a bank with fixed terms and buy cheap copies of pieces you like for the walls. Getting your money back or possibly a return is a bonus. If they have been on the wall and you've enjoyed them not making any money or even losing a bit isn't the end of the world

"Bankers bone up on Banksy", by maadbeats on Sept 19, 2009 15:42:48 GMT 1, of course everyone is concerned about price and potential economic value. Anyone that tells you diferently is full of sh!t. If we didnt we would all have $20 knock off posters hanging on our walls.
Yes we buy what we like but price will always play a good size roll. Hate to be the bad man here and will probably get s**t from it but who give a fcuk. Truth hurts
I have pieces that I keep for the walls, some for resale, and some for pure love. If I never sold anything I would have the amazing collection I have today. Which I am very proud of
AND YES I AGREE WITH CRAIG. PUT YOUR MONEY IN THE BANK IF YOU WANT A SURE SHOT INVESTMENT. ART IS A CRAP SHOOT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DEALING WITH NEW ARTISTS

100% And apologies if I was a bit stroppy earlier - day two of giving up fags (having smoked for over 20 years). "Tetchy" doesnt come close!

They will never sell them!!! They will put them next to their Beanie Baby and 90's comic book collections in the attic instead.

Not necessarily how I would have put it but do tend to agree, but what you like, can afford, put it on the wall and enjoy.
Banksy however is (my opinion again) THE artist of the generation, a phenomenom and unlikely to be surpassed. My old man's got some limited edition prints of some ducks (really) on his wall and are 50+ years old, I can't recall the artist's name but they're worth a shit load, not for sale until I inherit.
Who's to say Mighty Mo won't go the same way? (apart from Denzil). We'll all still be here in a year, though trading in Brixton Currency possibly which might suit some of us.....

"Bankers bone up on Banksy", by rosstierney on Sept 19, 2009 19:09:01 GMT 1, on the subject of investments, i remember a few members have mentioned bullionvault.com
if you use it, especially if you actively trade, exploiting the hour-by-hour rises & falls in the price of gold, to buy low and sell later, i'd appreciate a pm

"Bankers bone up on Banksy", by curiousgeorge on Sept 19, 2009 19:22:56 GMT 1, Playing the markets might suit you better Ross, you can set up some false accounts and play with pretend money until you feel confident enough. The gold ship has sailed unless you are investing huge amounts IMHO. I remember a family member talking me into investing in gold back in the early 90's, can't stand the sight of him now but God bless him

Surely if you think the 'Global' recession is over (unlike the one in the UK which is only just beginning, UK Plc is fooked thanks to Gordon Brown) then you'd be selling gold and buying pretty much else but?
You'd also like to think the ยฃ can't get any lower against the Euro? I recall seeing a site where you win a prize for being the best 'synthetic' trader but can't remember the name...

I think this will be true of a lot of artists people are buying up right now, but I don't believe Banksy will be one of them.

The huge sums of money spent in the last couple of years on some art in this 'scene' already looks strange and inflated, and as time goes by will look even more so.
