Shipping problem *Urgent help needed*, by mace on Sept 1, 2009 22:51:10 GMT 1, Hello everyone,
can anyone recommend a shipping company, which sends items (in this case a print of course) from the UK overseas (in this case to Germany) with an insurance around 1500 BP (equivalent to the print's value).
Thanks, mace

Do the major companies (UPS, DHL etc.) offer this service as well ? Don't get their homepages, very disturbing

Do a web search for "shipping insurance" don't have any experience with these companies though.

The insurance doesn't need to be 'art specific'. Just the value needs to be covered.

Shipping problem *Urgent help needed*, by snausages on Sept 1, 2009 23:39:17 GMT 1, I agree with digitalkid. Double tube the mofo and seal it in plastic (I once received some books form Europe soaked in vegetable oil) and ship it UPS uninsured if you have to.
^ Parcelforce, UPS, FDX will sell you insurance, but getting them to pay out for it once they investigate and realize it's an artwork, it will be very difficult to get them to pay.

Shipping problem *Urgent help needed*, by snausages on Sept 2, 2009 0:02:29 GMT 1, Not being snobbish but if you send something overnight air with UPS it's exact location is known at every minute, it spends less time in transit and has less chance of getting lost/destroyed, that matters to me when I'm sending something worth thousands of dollars. But sure parcelforce/usps is usually ok.

Shipping problem *Urgent help needed*, by bullet on Sept 2, 2009 0:06:13 GMT 1, you can track parcelforce items stage by stage with the right level of insurance. Its the same service as any other postal service, i dont understand the difference. They all hitch rides with each other. USPS turns into UPS when it gets to england

Shipping problem *Urgent help needed*, by bullet on Sept 2, 2009 0:33:43 GMT 1, it does not stay as parcelforce all the way there, its only parcelforce in the UK...
fedex and ups are the only main ones with exclusive handling if you will, but its not like they will cart the tube on cotton wool all the way there

Shipping problem *Urgent help needed*, by pork on Sept 2, 2009 0:56:49 GMT 1, I've used parcelforce for years now & have never had a bad experience with them, they insure up to 2.5k & send to most places, they are also (in my experience) a lot cheaper than similar services, I've tried using dhl & fedex - mostly at the buyers request, & have had nothing but grief with them...

I will second that. I had UPS trash a print (looked like it got stuck in a loader belt) and they were an absolute nightmare. In the old days they did their own insurance but now they outsource it and the insurers will delay endlessly plus produce their own valuations regardless of insured value or invoice. Bitter? Me?

Shipping problem *Urgent help needed*, by digitalkid on Sept 2, 2009 9:47:54 GMT 1, JB - I'm only going by personal experience with Parcelforce. I have had nothing but problems over the years with them delivering to me, the main problem being they use agency drivers who on the main do not give a sh!t. Everyone will sell you insurance for a fixed amount but when they know it's art and may need to replace it at above market value it becomes a different story..
Oh yeah and I'm a snob ;D
