Blogs, Bloggers, Bribery and Buying Off, by manchestermike on Sept 6, 2009 10:30:31 GMT 1, Reading about the Cartrain/Hirst/Pencils saga I found this quote on the 100artwoks site:
I've highlighted the part of interest.
As someone who doesn't blog, but reads many it has always struck me as a labour of love, writing about a topic of interest and passing information on to others in the correct spirit, without looking to gain anymore than the kudos of followers, something which I would like to do on a subject however time constrains prohibit me.
In my capacity as online gallery I often email blogs/bloggers about new art releases etc and it has always made me wonder why, while some blogs are very friendly, responsive and interested in the images I send that others may not post, respond or even acknowledge the emails yet at the same time continually post other artworks on a daily basis. I know of other people who have the same results from certain blogs.
I have to say I have never been asked for a freebie/bribe/inducement or however you'd like to call it to post work on a blog, but it makes me wonder if the fact I do not (and have never considered to) offer them means that with some blogs (and I will name no names) it means that you don't get new artwork posted.
My questions to the all the bloggers out there who use this forum are 1) have you ever been offered 'freebies' to blog? 2) do you accept 'freebies'? 3) does the receipt of these impact on what you blog about? 4) do the freebies come with conditions? i.e. you can have this for posting about gallery 'A' and ignoring gallery 'B' 4) do you consider blogging to be the passing on of information to the public or a business?
I've posted this under 'manchestermike' not 'edgeart' as I consider it to not be a gallery specific issue however more something of general interest as it seems a shame that certain blogs seem to neglect the interests of their followers in return for inducements.

I was waiting for that ;D
Which was why I posted it as under my name, not edgeart, as it's not a whine or a grumble, people (bloggers and galleries) are free to do as they wish. My interest is more are these 'blogs' (and again I stress I've never been asked for anything by any, nor offered anything, and have a good relationship with many) blogs in the true sense or are some of them just paid advertising sites masquerading as information sites?

Blogs, Bloggers, Bribery and Buying Off, by pezlow on Sept 6, 2009 11:05:01 GMT 1, Albeit my blog is about one specific sale it does get quite a lot of hits in the run up to the RCA Secret sale. I have only ever seen it as a labour of love and have never received a freebie or gratuity from it.

Blogs, Bloggers, Bribery and Buying Off, by Heavyconsumer on Sept 6, 2009 16:07:34 GMT 1, Some of the bloggers in this scene must either be receiving freebies or have a network of people/friends distributed around the world. When I say freebies, I don't mean artwork necessarily, but stuff like flights and accomodation. Otherwise, who has the spare time and cash to fly around the world from 1 continent to another blogging about gallery shows? And is this really any different to what may presumably happen with art correspondents/journalists in the mainstream artworld? I've wondered about this myself in the past and I'm curious to see who responds and what they have to say.
I'm not so interested in the blogs themselves, but some of them post some wonderful show photos, which when you live as far off the beaten track as I do, is a godsend. So thanks to the bloggers for that anyway.

Blogs, Bloggers, Bribery and Buying Off, by Grubster on Sept 7, 2009 2:33:05 GMT 1, I had a blog for a while and never have I posted something b/c of profit or gain. I did it out of love for art and the artist and the time and effort they put into their work. The only gain I got out of it was people's interest in the art that I collect and maybe down the line increasing in value; which doesn't matter to me much either. But with a newborn and work and wife, my blog skills have diminished.
