Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by hlarmy on Aug 15, 2009 19:47:50 GMT 1, Evening all
An artist friend of mine is pretty new to the art world and was wondering how to best promote her art. I won't post photos as it's not urban / graffiti art, but more traditional in context eg. landscape.
My query therefore is how a new artist can promote his / her art and what are the various ways in which you can get your art seen beyond the likes of eBay, flickr, twitter etc. Any advise would be welcome, from artists, galleries or collectors.
Cheers all

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by divided on Aug 17, 2009 2:05:33 GMT 1, uhm, i think a business card type thing would work. my friend did that and he gets a lot of business. it might be a little harder if its traditional art though. that kind of art appeals to middle aged and older people. so you have to think about how they can be reached. hope that helps

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by hlarmy on Aug 17, 2009 12:14:38 GMT 1, Cheers Divided, a business card is a good idea but there's still the problem of how to get your art seen my the maximum number of people.
Do any artists or galleries have any advise - things they have done to get noticed and make some sales. Bear in mind this is someone just starting off with no experience in either art world or marketing, and a lack of money to pay for a website etc.
Thanks all

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by petest on Aug 17, 2009 12:39:24 GMT 1, Why not approach bars/restaurants locally? They might let her hang a few, plenty of passing trade.
Also contact local galleries etc. I'm sure they'll be interested.
I'm full of advice, but I've never done any of the above, but might be helpful.

The local bars / restaurants is a good idea.
I'd be inclined to advise her to avoid galleries at the moment as I'm a firm believer that it's a good idea to keep prices affordable in the early stages of her career, unless of course a reputable gallery offers to show her work.

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by Mish Mash on Aug 17, 2009 12:49:13 GMT 1, Get some stuff on here! & other forums. I'm sure a few new pieces would get a look regardless of context.
Do a Press release/ booklet of work & send to every gallery in the country asking for space. Then maybe extend that to every newspaper & magazine art critic + its free via email :-) Maybe some sort of PR stunt i.e. leaving 1000 piece's on the street for people (make sure you tell the press first ;-)
Fake just did a free website thing that looks good, a link is on here somewhere.
Good luck

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by Heavyconsumer on Aug 17, 2009 12:52:24 GMT 1, My cousin's an artist, who does lots of sci-fi/horror stuff and also some illustrationwork. He likes using portfolio websites. There seems to be an element of community which is a nice bonus as it offers the chance of feedback from fellow artists (if wanted), but I assume people looking for new talent probably check out such things. Can't do any harm I guess! I'm sure there are loads, but here are a couple. My cousin started out with the 1st, but now uses the 2nd and prefers it.

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by schlomo on Aug 17, 2009 12:58:38 GMT 1, Yeah i agree with HC there man, she needs to get everything online so people can see it. Flickr is of course good, but other community websites are very handy. Some community sites have events where everyone puts in work and then everyone gets to judge. Mish is right about Fakes site, made for free. You an also get them to publish it which again gives you an online portfolio. If she uses a Mac tell her to use iweb. You can easily create a website, join up to mobileme for 50 quid a year and then publish your site and pics etc online.

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by Danny O'Connor on Aug 17, 2009 13:19:36 GMT 1, I just found this site which I'm going to use to make my own website when I get a chance: otherpeoplespixels.com/ It looks quite easy to do and to maintain, also has a nice professional look to it. It's $16 a month (not sure in ยฃs)
Might get myself on some portfolio sites too. I've also signed up to twitter and myspace but yet to get started on them. I've exhibited in cafes and wine bars and I've had sales through that route.

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by hlarmy on Aug 17, 2009 14:23:26 GMT 1, Thanks HC and Mish Mash, some good stuff there and it's much appreciated.
I haven't seen a huge amount of her work but what I have seen I have been quite impressed with; I'll see whether she minds me posting some of her work on here as some stage in the future as a one-off but as Divided said, I personally think it's art that will appear to the 'older' generation - no offense Wizzy
Danny, one good turn deserves another so here's a little bump for your last remaining print - cracking value for money. This is a must for anyone who has not yet bought a DOC...

Back to the thread, if anyone cares to add anything to the above, the more the merrier - it may also help the forum artists and those lurkers who wish to promote their own art...

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by lumbo on Aug 17, 2009 16:44:59 GMT 1, Providing she's got thick skin, you just have to bang on as many doors, fire out as many emails, and pimp yourself relentlesly - if the work shows promise people will eventually listen.
Flickr's good, but is kinda like selling ice to eskimos - she should contact galleries, sign up for events, and be prepared to spend a bit and maybe go for one of these pay to display group shows certain places have, just to get over that hurdle... then, who knows.

Advice wanted: how to promote your art, by handsomedevil on Aug 17, 2009 19:22:14 GMT 1, I'm kind of in the same situation having only been pushing my work for the last year since graduating but you've really got to invest a little get a booklet printed with buisness cards, get a website (some agencies are a bit funny they dont like looking at flikr or myspace type things) but getting work online is essential in this day and age. Also as someone said get involved with group shows check out this place www.showcase-london.com You'd have to spend a bit of money but take the plunge because you never know if you don't give it a try.
