Money no object which 4 paintings would you get?, by sashaz on Aug 3, 2009 14:03:04 GMT 1, Money isnt an object, you can afford any painting so which 4 items would you have in your collection?
there are other artists than Banksy too.
I would choose (for the ones I can think of now):
1) shah pahlavi portrait by warhol (cos i like warhol and Im iranian). 2) Monet (one of the garden scenes or the strole).

Money no object which 4 paintings would you get?, by snausages on Aug 3, 2009 16:58:38 GMT 1, Tough one, maybe Diebenkorn, Duchamp, Neo Rauch, Hieronymus Bosch...?
But hard to say as even if money were no object I'm not sure how easy it would be to find a great Duchamp or Bosch that is actually up for sale. I imagine the best ones are permanently in museums.

Money no object which 4 paintings would you get?, by snausages on Aug 3, 2009 20:27:47 GMT 1, Yeah, there's little chance you'll ever be able to own guernica or starry night, don't know about the warhol or pollock. If there were no limits this would be hanging on my wall, but fat chance of this piece ever going back into a private collection.

True, but the question intrigued me from a "if i could have anything perspective". We've all made the alternative decisions based upon our own collections. There is an obvious reason why Guernica is *arguably* the most vauable work of art in the world. I would love nothing more to replace "the corner" as my disciplinary time out for a 2 year old and instead force him to stand front and center with his hands behind his back looking up at that composition until it scared him straight. But I fear that even that wouldn't work on my son and instead he would probably find it funny to color it with a crayon much to the world's dismay.

Money no object which 4 paintings would you get?, by raiden on Aug 3, 2009 20:48:29 GMT 1, Damn Lee, you picked 3 of my 4.
1) Starry Night 2) A Pollock of some variety 3) Guernica (or other insane Picasso)
After that, it gets more tricky... Probably whatever is would fetch the most at auction -- something in the $200M range ... so that I could sell it and buy a crap load of the most insane urban art pieces out there - Monkey Parliament, a 10 meter long Choe mural, a 5 meter high Matt Small portrait, a 20 meter long Herakut master work mural, a Sistine Chapel sized mural by Paul Insect ... Just ridiculous commissioned pieces by my favorites in the scene that would all be epic. Hell, I'd even go so far as to pay MBW not to paint, just to spare us.
But apart from that sort of "I'd wish for more wishes" sort of scenario...
I think the fourth piece would be "Nude Descending Staircase" by Duchamp... Maybe a Monet.

Money no object which 4 paintings would you get?, by raiden on Aug 3, 2009 20:50:55 GMT 1, That is a good question.... Supposing that for some impossible reason, Guernica was to fall back into private hands... would it be the most expensive piece of art ever if it wasn't "priceless?"

There would be a bidding war by about 7-8 of the richest people on the planet. It would go for at least a billion. Bill Gates would probably wind up victorious.

I believe some would argue Mona Lisa, David, or a few others. There is certainly a price tag on anything but we're talking billions of dollars at that level.
>>>It would go for at least a billion.<<<
I've asked this question in very knowledgable circles many times over and the consensus that I've gotten over the years is 5 to 10 billion US though that was prior to last fall. Another topic that is often fun to ask at dinners is "who do you feel is the 3rd most important visual artist of the 20th century and why?" I continue to get very interesting responses and just a month ago, one artist replied Walt Disney which is something nobody has ever said to me before but I thought it was a very interesting reply.
And so goes a boring Monday...

Money no object which 4 paintings would you get?, by monkeyart on Aug 3, 2009 22:09:32 GMT 1, Lee3, you'd have to fight me for the Guernica, just behind the UN and the spanish :-) But I think I'll have to make do with a lovely hand painted copy from Havana. Also would choose a Vincent just not sure which, but Don Mclean did write a good tune about that piece. Also CG - I lived with that first Dali print on my teenage bedroom wall for many years and still to this day intrigues me. Pollock would also be there or there abouts, (so tempted by Parla!!) Another of my all time favs is Marcel Duchamp - Nude Decending A Staircase, for me this epitomizes my favourite movement. Also good to have a dream, nice thread by the way! NB: Thanks for the intro to Gregory Crewsdon work, looks great, any links to available work, obviously you get first dibs ;-)

Money no object which 4 paintings would you get?, by sashaz on Aug 3, 2009 22:16:09 GMT 1, would the louvre accept $1 billion for the mona lisa? what would they replace it with and would the louvre loose its place in the artworld?
I do love da vinci and would take one of his preparotory sketches for the war painting he was going to do (whole bunch of soldiers getting ready for war and I cannot find it anywhere).

Money no object which 4 paintings would you get?, by raiden on Aug 3, 2009 22:56:38 GMT 1, Lee3... interesting concept... most important visual artist of the 20th century and why.... I definitely think Disney.
Interesting link I found as I was brainstorming who else I might include... not a bad for the top 10, though only includes Americans.
www.worthpoint.com/article/top-30-american-visual-artisans-of-the-20th-century
I think its hard to decide someone bigger than Disney... But another notables not included in that list... Jack Kirby, head artist for Marvel and artistic creator (Stan Lee devised the story) for Captain America, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, Iron Man, Spiderman, etc. etc. I'd make the case for including him in the top 10 because of his importance to comic book art.
In terms of 20th century influence by a fine artist, Duchamp is pretty high on the list for me. Not saying he's better than Dali, Picasso, etc. but I think he was arguably more influential in challenging perceptions and steering the fine art world in directions.
But I think you're right, Disney probably takes the cake. If only because his art empire continues exerting influence on art today and few modern fine artists haven't produced a piece with some form or direct or indirect Disney commentary.
