Rolled Canvases Need Framing - HELP!, by ricobenfico on Jul 22, 2009 22:02:05 GMT 1, Hi All,
Recently purchased a nice triptych in Thailand when I was over but shipping it back was going to be double-triple what the art cost. So we took it off the frame, rolled it and thankfully it was fine when we got it home. Now I need to try and find someone to stretch it. Has anyone done this themselves, got a framer to do it? Any comments or guidance would be appreciated!
Thank you!

Rolled Canvases Need Framing - HELP!, by ricobenfico on Jul 22, 2009 22:28:31 GMT 1, I see you posted in the Framing section of the forum a while ago Pez. You done it? Whats a rough ball park cost and is it fairly simple? Not potential damage to the pieces? They are pretty big, 120x60cm and 3 of them obviously. PM if you'd like.

Rolled Canvases Need Framing - HELP!, by neale on Jul 23, 2009 13:21:31 GMT 1, Its not too tricky to do yourself as long as you have a good staple gun, just build the stretcher up ,tack the canvas on starting in the corners and working in towards the centre, stretching the canvas with your fingers as you go.When you've done that, stretch it tight by tapping out the wooden wedges in the corners of the frame.

hmm I start at the center and work out to the corners , it was something I picked up watching BAST canvasses get stretched up a couple of years ago..

I've watched a couple of vids on Youtube doing this, just not sure I want to risk doing it myself on such a piece. Think I'll be sticking my hand in my pocket!

Rolled Canvases Need Framing - HELP!, by elwheel on Jul 24, 2009 0:59:56 GMT 1, Was always taught to stretch canvas opposing centres first then work out to the corners - but that was for fresh canvas before the gesso goes on, may be different for canvases that have already been painted.

Rolled Canvases Need Framing - HELP!, by ricobenfico on Jul 24, 2009 18:47:13 GMT 1, Just spoken to a couple of framers in Edinburgh. One I've used before is looking at ยฃ130ish or a new guy (good shop/workshop, looks very busy) for ยฃ20-ยฃ25 per piece +VAT so say ยฃ80.
Decided not to try it myself but thanks Static.
