£3,000 Banksy Won for 1p, by Daniel Silk on Apr 15, 2009 20:23:23 GMT 1, www.thelondonpaper.com/thelondonpaper/news/london/art-lover-wins-£3000-banksy-work-for-just-one-penny
Art lover wins £3,000 Banksy work for just one penny
AN ART lover told today how he won a Banksy artwork worth £3,000 in a 1p raffle.
Joe O’Donoghue, 30, won the graffiti guru's “Trolley” print from more than 10,000 people who had entered the draw.
Some 500 hopefuls were invited to a secret draw at a studio near Carnaby Street where O’Donoghue’s number was drawn from the hat.
After a nerve-wracking moment when he realised he didn’t have one penny on him, he borrowed a coin from the crowd and was declared the winner.
The advertising executive from Maida Vale, said: “I couldn’t believe I had won it – it was an amazing feeling. Most young people know about Banksy, he is an artist of our times.
“To win one of his prints - which is also pretty valuable - is brilliant.”
O’Donoghue said he has been a Banksy fan since 1998, well before the likes of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made him one of the most famous living artists.
"We wanted to give everyone the chance to own a Banksy. By spending over £3,000 on the piece and selling it for a penny, it’s a bit like playing Robin Hood." The Australian said he used to wander around Hackney and Bethnal Green searching for original Banksy graffiti when he moved to London five years ago.
He said: “Banksy is a fantastic part of London. His pieces are really poignant. He’s got a brilliant way of breaking down the problems in our society.”
Although the guerrilla artist’s tagline is “Art for All”, his pieces usually fetch six-figure sums and can only be afforded by wealthy art collectors.
Pete Matthews, founder of art collective Artichoke who organised the contest, said: “Unfortunately Banksy has become elitist and forgotten about the regular people who put him in the position where he is today.

While the identity of Bristol-born Banksy remains unknown, his graffiti continues to appear around London.
Last month he was given a taste of his own spray paint after one of his graffiti works in north London was vandalised.
After Banksy had written “last graffiti before motorway” on the side of a power station in Hendon, north London, someone else sprayed “Priceless” over it.

Yeh, course he has thats why he still does street pieces for everyone, Cans festival ect and also doesnt take the piss with his print prices unlike some.
Why offer a Banksy print in a competition and then slag him off?

£3,000 Banksy Won for 1p, by manty on Apr 16, 2009 11:34:27 GMT 1, LOL
He is quite elite in his own unique way, all anti establishment and such, and theres nought wrong with selling a few hundred prints at a few hundred quid, which in truth is pretty fair in my little book.
Though i do wonder why he doesnt give it all up and become a pop star instead

£3,000 Banksy Won for 1p, by mike hunt on Apr 16, 2009 13:06:53 GMT 1, Seems like an extreme reaction to what was probably a throw away line. Its a newspaper quote so it may have been taken out of context to seem a bit controversial. I'm sure artichoke are fans of mr b or wouldn't be doing this - the product has become a bit elite due to the cost - maybe thats what he meant, rather than a personal slight on the artist.
