Authentication. One good/One bad!, by brut on Mar 16, 2009 21:38:35 GMT 1, I own a fair few banksy prints which i have purchased over the last five years mostly from POW/santas ghetto & Art Republic which all have cast iron provenance. There were 2 prints that i missed the boat on at the time so i went down the ebay route to obtain them which i did so.These prints are Bomb Hugger & Turf War.I purchased them in early 2005 & paid approx £120 each for them. I wanted to have these prints checked for authenticity so i did no more than take them into Dora at pow for them to be inspected & registered in my name. There was no problem with the Bomb Hugger print as i had the previous owners details but the Turf war print had no contact details of previous owner & their ebay account has laid dormant for a few years so i was getting no replys to my questions. Dora contacted me to explain that the print was a 'back door print'(same inks, paper & size),that someone had numbered themselves and then sold on as she had contacted the owner with the same numbered turf war & they still have it in their possesion. Dora explained that there were a few of these about at the time as turf war was not printed in house so the printer sold a few 'extras' on. I was a little gutted to be told this but also pleased that i had not spent big bucks on the print & pleased that the bomb hugger was legit. The print has been stamped on the rear by pow as not by banksy as this is what they do with the prints that were not sold by pow. This will not be going back on my wall & i think it will end up back on ebay but this time i'll make sure whoever buys it knows the full history. All in all i'm pleased the authentication process works.

I'll place money on knowing who's behind yours, please let Art & Antiques know if Dora hasn't already done so. If you want the direct email of the person in charge of the investigation pm me, he's a useful person.

Authentication. One good/One bad!, by brut on Mar 16, 2009 21:59:56 GMT 1, Thats Shit Funster.I feel for you man.Dora has reported it. The strange thing with my two ebay purchases were that i did not even think about authenticity as the idea of there being any other than the pow sold prints via pow & a few other gallerys did not even enter my head. I think it is easy to fall for this as it is essentially a legit print as it was on the same print run.Where it is not legit is where someone outside pow is selling the same print twice. I think if they are sold as backdoor prints then fair enough but to sell it as legit is low. I can see why pow started blind stamping prints in 2005. I am down to my last 13 banksy prints now! If anyone is interested in a back door turf war print then let me know if not it will end up on the bay.

Authentication. One good/One bad!, by funster on Mar 16, 2009 22:06:48 GMT 1, It does leave an interesting question as the last I heard they were going to destroy my prints, but now this would seem extremely unfair in light of the way they now deal with it. Also my 'fake' was every bit as the original I later replaced it by - apart from the forgers used slightly better quality paper.

Authentication. One good/One bad!, by Prescription Art on Mar 16, 2009 22:29:35 GMT 1, The trouble is, on so many of these early prints there were numbering mistakes. There were a couple of instances where two prints had the same number, and for example my signed Laugh Now was originally numbered out of 600 instead of 150 (this was kindly changed for me). So anyway, I feel that it's hasty to mark it as 'backdoor' when it could easily have been a numbering or database cock-up.

Is it not a case that back door were unofficial prints from the same source but fakes are not?
Might explain the difference in POW's approach.

I think it's a trust issue, so they must trust all the staff at POW now which is a good thing ,oh and CCTV helps too.

Authentication. One good/One bad!, by Sliding on the Walls on Mar 17, 2009 10:56:36 GMT 1, If you've been sitting on a legitimate banksy print for some time without getting it checked over, is there a chance that somebody else could have a backdoor print with the same number, and taken it to POW for authentification whilst yours was sitting happily on your wall? Then your official one could be mistaken for a backdoor one. Is that right?
