RANK Exhibit - not urban art but ..., by Octopus UK on Feb 27, 2009 21:17:31 GMT 1, There is currently an exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery entitled RANK. It comprises of 100 piece that attempt to show how artists have respresented rank or social status in Britain over the years. At lunch time today I gave it a quick tour and liked it so am planning a more leasurely view later. There is a piece by misteraitch which makes it slightly on topic.
One other piece was a cartoon of rats attacking a castle of cats - a bit sureal but nice imagry. There is also a free print to take away. I left this at work so I can't provide a picture.
It's on tour so if you can't make it to Leeds it might be coming near you soon!

" Rank: Picturing The Social Order 1615-2009
14 February โ 26 April 2009
This fascinating and unusual exhibition, which looks at how artists have pictured the shape of society from Renaissance times to the present, opens its UK tour at Leeds Art Gallery. A society without stratification is barely imaginable, but how do we picture our own system of hierarchies, of difference? British writers, political theorists and artists have used numerous images to picture โwho we areโ: describing us through โordersโ, โestatesโ, โclassesโ, โstationsโ, โdegreesโ, or โranksโ. But only this latter term has kept the same meaning over six centuries. With over 100 exhibits, new work from leading contemporary artists and the presentation of new social research from academics and government agencies."
Opening Times Monday 10am โ 8pm Tuesday 10am โ 8pm Wednesday 12pm- 8pm Thursday 10 am -5pm Friday 10 am -5pm Saturday 10 am -5pm Sunday 1pm- 5pm
Admission Charges Free admission.
