Multi layered stencils - question, by Coach on Feb 22, 2009 0:13:31 GMT 1, As posted here a while ago me and my lads had a go at stenciling, and had great fun. We were just cutting straight forward stencils and spraying onto cardboard - just one colour - black. Tomorrow we are going to have a foolhardy attempt at multi layered stencilling. We have sketched out the images that they want to do. My plan is draw the image in detail on paper, showing which areas are which colours. I bought some asotate (not sure ofthe spelling of that) and we will put that over the drawing, then mark out on each piece of asotate the different areas for each different colour. Then we plan to just cut out those areas from the asotate and use the various pieces of asotate as the stencils themselves. Does that sound about right. Anyone got any tips/advice? Does the plan sound right - or am I getting it horribly wrong? I have no idea - just guessing really! Thanks c (And I thought the kids were looking forward to this - I cant wait!!)

Multi layered stencils - question, by Dellboyy on Feb 22, 2009 0:27:22 GMT 1, Yeah can't see any major issues with that!
One tip would be to try registration marks... basically cut a square/cross into each layer in the same place so when it comes to positioning the new layer, just match the mark you will have sprayed from the first layer!
Obviously make sure you put a bit of masking tape down where the mark will be sprayed so you don't get a nice big cross on your image (you won't believe how many times i've done this and had to start again!! ;D)

Multi layered stencils - question, by Dellboyy on Feb 22, 2009 0:28:34 GMT 1, Obviously the above would be more help if you were using card like me... if you're using Acetate i suppose you could just see the image!
Aah... unless it's the second time you've used the stencil, so can't see through the Acetate!

Multi layered stencils - question, by Coach on Feb 22, 2009 0:37:42 GMT 1, Cheers dellboyy. We used card when doing just one layer. We are using the see through stuff so we can match up what we have already sprayed - couldnt work out any other way of doing it. Though you are right, it does seem like it will mean a one off spray - I cant work out how you artists do it otherwise! Bought some spray repositionable adhisive too - guesing its the stuff you can use to getthe stencil to stick nice and flat to the cardboard, and then peel the stencil off? And get nice clean edges? This is for my kids ... honest!! Appreciate the comments and suggestions guys. c

Multi layered stencils - question, by Dellboyy on Feb 22, 2009 0:41:26 GMT 1, To be honest i've never actually tried the spray adhesive stuff, i just weigh down with a few coins!
And if you do want to use the stencil more than once, just try the registration marks and bit of masking tape!

Multi layered stencils - question, by pointblank on Feb 22, 2009 0:41:34 GMT 1, Like Del said positioning marks for card & obviously for acetate its see through so you will know where to line up. Adhesives good but just as good is using some 1p coins ( which you can obviously reuse), sometimes adhesive leaves a mark if you dont get the balance right.

Multi layered stencils - question, by LEVI C on Feb 22, 2009 13:43:10 GMT 1, Hi Guys!
Yeh i do multi-layer and swear by acetate. Obviously being clear its ideal to line up the following layers, but also if you have sprayed a layer a few times you can peel the paint off and its clear again! . Like Del said though if you are careful when cutting to start with and position every layer in the same place you can just pencil round the corners of the first layer and then fit the other layers into the corner. You can also quickly spray paint onto the acitate before positioning to add a bit of extra weight, avoiding underspray etc. Don't forget to apply your layers fairly thin by holding from a distance or you can get bleeding in the detailed bits.
Hope it helps, go for it!

Hey AP, It's one of my lads "helping out" at Upfest. The day was a really huge lasting memeory for them - one them asked within the last 48 hours whether there is an Upfest this year!

Multi layered stencils - question, by Ripper1331 on Feb 24, 2009 3:28:16 GMT 1, Hey Coach,
I have a page of step-by-step multilayer stencil action here: urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?board=ripper1331&action=display&thread=6945 It should give you a good idea how the layers go down with the registration marks cut into the stencil.
Good luck with the spraying and let me know if you have any questions!

Multi layered stencils - question, by Fake on Feb 25, 2009 23:58:43 GMT 1, Hi guys!
I still use paper 250grams.... I use it and like it! the only downside it the paper only last 4 to 7 times. Acetate i know and used before. but it has only one down side also (for me) it reacts to trhe paint and curls and bubbles a while and the it straitens out again. but am i the only one? do you have the same reaction?

Multi layered stencils - question, by optiknerve on Feb 26, 2009 0:09:39 GMT 1, The only problems I tend to have with acetate, is if I store the cut stencil in the house and then take it outside (in to the cold) it tends to curl a bit. No problems with paint though, maybe I ain't doing it right??? :-)
