£10k jewel gang raid Darwen home - but miss rare Banksy artwork
8:00am Tuesday 3rd February 2009 By David Watkinson »
THIEVES stole £10,000 of unique jewellery in a raid on a Darwen home – but failed to spot a rare Banksy hanging on the wall.
The burglary at the home of airline pilots Martin and Emma Vizzard, off Bolton Road, saw more than 30 necklaces, watches and rings stolen.
But the thieves failed in their bid to steal Mr Vizzard’s £58,000 TVR Sagaris sportscar and after ransacking the first floor of his home left the downstairs untouched, where a painting by Banksy, the controversial graffitti artist, worth £2,000 hangs.
Mr Vizzard, 34, who grew up in the town and now works for luxury airline Netjets, which is based in Lisbon, said: “We have been completely violated.
“The stuff that has ben stolen can be replaced but from a personal point of view it is horrendous that people have been through the house. No amount of money can compensate for that.”
The couple were away on holiday in Dubai at the time of the burglary early on Friday.
Police said that the Vizzard’s home was one of three targetted over the weekend in the area.
Two other break-ins were thwarted after the burgalrs were disturbed.
The burglars broke into the Vizzard’s house by a rear patio door.
Mr Vizzard said every piece of jewellery that he has bought his wife, who is also a pilot for delivery firm DHL, in the past eight years was taken.
He added: “Most of the jewellery was unique. My wife makes many pieces as a hobby and it is heartbreaking that so much has been taken.”
Among the pieces stolen was a distinctive limited edition charcoal-coloured Omega titanium watch worth £2,500 and a silver woman’s Armarni necklace worth £1,000.
DS Ian Geogarty said one of the burglars was described as male, 180cms tall and wearing dark clothing and a beany hat.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Darwen CID on 01254 353841 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Thieves Miss Rare Banksy, by raiden on Feb 4, 2009 1:46:14 GMT 1, I don't get art theft entirely. It seems much harder to sell a numbered print or an original piece and not get nabbed than jewelry.
Pre-internet I could see, but now with the internet and the way provenance has progressed, its much easier for the information to get out there about stolen pieces.

Thieves Miss Rare Banksy, by Daniel Silk on Feb 5, 2009 0:29:53 GMT 1, www.artinfo.com/news/story/30293/banksy-painting-untouched-in-home-burglary/
"DARWEN, England—Burglars who broke into a private home whose owners were vacationing in Dubai stole £10,000 (approximately $14,000) worth of jewelry, yet neglected to steal a Banksy painting hanging on a downstairs wall, the Mirror reports.
The work is worth an estimated £20,000.
"I can't believe they didn't spot the Banksy," a source said. "His work is going up in value all the time and it is very distinctive." "They mustn't have had a clue what it was."
In 2007, Banksy's Space Girl and Bird sold for a record £288,000."

The peepz have been robbed.. they don't need a re-visit I am not a private detective....took me 10 seconds on google armed with the info from the newspaper article Maybe posting the article in the first place on a banksy forum was not the smartest idea in hindsight and the newspaper are crazy for over information in the first place its almost goading the robbers " haha look what stuff you missed whilst robbing this guy" There should be some kind of privacy protection on forums. Just because you posted what could be found on google doesn't mean that information found there should be posted on a public forum. Just for example.. what if some t**t went and stole this print and said they saw the guys details posted on the banksy forum.. Not sure how this stands for a possible lawsuit, as the forum is responsible for the content??? My point is that we need to be careful with personal information posted on public forums.. and posting names and addresses where we can find a £20K print to hinch is not cool.
