Insuring / valuing your collection., by wazandy on Dec 31, 2008 6:55:05 GMT 1, After a fair few years, I've gathered together what (I think, anyway) is quite a nice, hefty collection.
Obviously, getting them all nicked by the bastard who robbed my neighbour two doors up (whilst he was asleep by the way, and after finding some car keys drove off with the stolen property in a brand new Audi) is a constant worry.
How do you go about valuing these things for insurance purposes? How does it work? I mean, I've got pieces that have shot up in value, then dropped over the last few months (as we've all seen..)
Do I need someone who can give an honest appraisal of the pieces by today's market value, or is it based on the future potential? Anyone spring to mind?
Cheers.. would hate to wake up and find 'em gone without the right insurance..

Insuring / valuing your collection., by telsin on Dec 31, 2008 20:13:00 GMT 1, The minimum you would need for insurance purposes is photographic evidence in your own home and authenticity certificates, obviously receipts would be handy although the replacement value would be the value of the item of the date of the loss.
I would also ensure your insurance policy has a specified item value that you are happy with otherwise you may need to list each item separately on the policy.

Insuring / valuing your collection., by biglee1 on Jan 1, 2009 17:07:42 GMT 1, hi im insured with norwich union they do a specialist art insurance it used to called tapestry but its changed.they were really good value my policy covers individual items upto 15000 and anything over that needs to be listed as a specific article. you basically tell them how much your total collection is worth plus your home contents and they put it all together.
hope this helps

It's one of the cheapest assets to insure because art is relatively safe and there is a much greater risk of loss due to fire than there is to theft. It's very difficult to sell stolen art so its value is a mere fraction of what it would be worth given a legal sale.
In my case, we are insured through Chubb and pay our housing insurance and then specifically schedule each piece of art or jewelry. You do not need an appraisal for anything under $100k US and do need an appraisal for any piece over that amount. The policy also provides coverage up to 150% of the scheduled value in the event that it was stolen or destroyed and there has been an obvious increase in value since the last appraisal. The cost to schedule art as an add onto my Chubb policy is $0.21 per $1,000 of value (21 cents per thousand.) So, if one owned a million dollars worth of art you are paying an additional $210 on top of your homeowners or renter's policy which can vary but for most is probably between a few hundred and a couple thousand dollars per year.

Insuring / valuing your collection., by TAOI on Jan 1, 2009 19:27:47 GMT 1, The main UK players are Norwich Union Distinct and Hiscox, with Hiscox invariably people's insurer of choice. On the whole your collection should be worth atleast ยฃ15k (not speculatively, but what it would make today in current climates). TAOI was forced into a fairly low key end to 2008 due to normal issues surrounding any new business, however during December we were awarded a Hiscox agency in their words "Due to the specialist nature of many of our products and services, it is important to us that our brokers have a high degree of expertise, market knowledge and an excellent reputation. As such Hiscox works in partnership with a small number of professional intermediaries". TAOI will still recommend other insurers where we feel it is appropriate, but Hiscox is often the market leader for medium value UK collections. Lee is right, Chubb are very good for the right collections too. Expect to see TAOI around a lot more in 2009

Insuring / valuing your collection., by lee3 on Jan 8, 2009 20:08:14 GMT 1, I wanted to bump this thread back up to make sure what I had typed above was correct as I had been giving it thought. I emailed my agent to confirm and like so many things I do, I wrote the wrong information down and therefore need to correct myself. My agent just emailed me the following:
The premium rate on your policy for fine arts: 1st $100,000: $1.995 per thousand over $100,000: $1.47 per thousand
That's quite a bit different than what I had typed above (which I had copied from my insurance contact tab in outlook and therfore had misentered the info). Regardless, the information i typed on this post is correct for Chubb in California. Sorry for any confusion this caused.

Insuring / valuing your collection., by veralynn on Jan 31, 2009 17:30:48 GMT 1, Its considered relatively low risk, some scrotes (possibly from Enfield as that's where they found the car) broke into my house and nicked the laptop and my car...
Generally, the crack addled filth that conduct this kind off activity don't have much of a clue about contemporary art, they took the laptop, worth a ton, but left the Neate and the expensive roadbike....they got 'em though, as one of them left a fag butt in the car with his dna on it and he was caught on CCTV etc, no trial date set, no doubt he will get a trip to Barbados jet skiing to compensate for his troubled upbringing as punishment, rather than his hands cut off......

When you look at the statistics art is considered a relatively 'safe' risk. The major fears for art insurers are water and fire. Theft means it's still out there somewhere and often recovered fairly quickly. Also trying to trade crack for a Neate print isn't too easy comapred to a nice juicy laptop or mobile phone. Also 99.9% of the population would have gone for the laptop over the Neate if asked to guess which was worth more.
This obviously isn't true of specially targetted attacks.
