Its a sh1t month , by neale on Jan 31, 2009 21:56:55 GMT 1, Noticed a general flatness recently on the forum, understandable really now that our art is worth shit, but lets pull together and find great stuff to buy cheap, if you love it the value is pointless, but if you have a great tip, pass it on here , and lets all get some art we can afford in these difficult times

Its a sh1t month , by greeneny on Jan 31, 2009 23:41:11 GMT 1, If you followed the "Art Collectors Golden Rule" and only bought what you loved, then its all good. It was a bad month and all signs say it will get much much worse. A great deal of this downturn is the fear. Fear feeding on fear creating more fear and everyone holding back causing the downturn to become worse. Contrary to 24/7 cable news reports, the sky is just not falling. At least not yet. There are great opportunities but don't forget new art, those at the very early stages, those who may not be tested yet, those who you like but would rather not risk .. remember the rule. If you like it, it should be on your short list of "would like to have" no matter what. Just my opinion

Its a sh1t month , by raiden on Feb 1, 2009 0:13:00 GMT 1, I know I haven't been on as much because I can't bear to see all the stuff I can no longer afford!!! Business dropped 60,000% for me in one month. I literally just closed up my business and started anew because I figure it was better than swimming against the tide.
Here in LA, it seems like everyone is unemployed. I went out with 6 friends for the first time in a while, and 5 of 6 admitted they were unemployed.
I'll be fine in the long run, but I don't plan on buying art work for a while. If it wasn't for the fact that I made some good buys last year and flipped some work it would be waaaay worse.

Its a sh1t month , by Winter on Feb 1, 2009 0:44:32 GMT 1, Now is a very good time to be buying art if you're careful. You'll look back in a couple of years and wish you'd hoovered up more when you had the chance.

Its a sh1t month , by fuzzed on Feb 1, 2009 2:27:20 GMT 1, I've been wondering about the posts in this forum recently. This is merely based on what I've seen.
The first time I became aware of this forum was because I was in Berlin and wanted to see some Banksy pieces. This forum had a lot of good info on it and directed me to the right places. As it turned out, by the time I was there a lot or almost all of the banksy street pieces had disappeared. I thought I'd join because it seemed a good place to find info out about where to spot a banksy or info about his work.
But, since visiting regularly everything I read just seems to be about people investing and out to make a quick buck. Is this what it's really about? Is it a bad month because art is worth shit (quoted from the op) ? Why do people* not post about the art on the streets? Surely we're here because of one of the biggest stencil artists of all time that gets his work up on the street?
Rant over, make of it what you will.
* thanks to those people that do, you know who you are.

Its a sh1t month , by raiden on Feb 1, 2009 4:42:36 GMT 1, I agree somewhat fuzzed - but ultimately a huge portion of this board is about new art and art buying. Part of collecting is about values and also making educated decisions about what to buy when... That also factors into appreciation of art. Does it get crass at times, sure. I've several times broken things down with terms you hear more on Wall St. than SoHo, but at the end of the day, I think its good the board has both.
For me, I'm less on the board because its agonizing seeing so much great work that I both appreciate and know will appreciate that I shouldn't buy because I have to be really smart with budgeting my limited resources now that my business went south.
But yes, we are coming upon a good buying time. All the February auctions should provide some big deals. Unless I get some miraculous sudden windfall - I will be sitting on the sidelines.

Its a sh1t month , by Heavyconsumer on Feb 1, 2009 5:18:40 GMT 1, Was very impressed with Romanywg's photos of the Xenz show, it looks excellent. Wish I had the spendable to pick up a piece from Forster Gallery. Dale's show looks great over at Signal too. On the print side of things, Art El have just offered a Richt edition for £40, which seems quite reasonable to me.

Its a sh1t month , by slowmo on Feb 1, 2009 14:30:54 GMT 1, A by product of the creation of the street art discussion thread meant that most of the interesting stuff, ie photo's of street work got moved to it and no one really looks there. So because they get moved the general thread does just look like one big sales thread. Fuzzed, I would suggest opening a flickr account (if you haven't already) and getting the likes of romanywg, nolionsinengland and many artists as contacts. Its where I get most of my fixes from when I just want to look at a painted wall or some new art. Getting lots of contacts also means that every time you log on there is tonnes of new stuff to look at.

Yeah agree with you about the main board, I do try check the others but tend to spend most of my time in here.
