Is it a bit boring at the moment?, by Daniel Silk on Jan 29, 2009 0:15:23 GMT 1, Most of the Artists spent the last two or three months of 2008 working on stuff for the Christmas Gallery shows that we all enjoyed ;D I think now its just gonna take a bit of time for the new work of 2009 to be released, and for the Galleries to sort out what shows they want to do.

Is it a bit boring at the moment?, by fatherxmas on Jan 29, 2009 1:04:00 GMT 1, Comments from silky and junkie art i have to agree with
no disrespect but prints are aimed at the lower scale buyers and if a new print gets released and dont sell out its not good for the artist like silks has mentioned. i just think people are tightening there belts, saving for the rainin day in which could mean having no job.

Is it a bit boring at the moment?, by Heavyconsumer on Jan 29, 2009 2:10:40 GMT 1, I think way too much stigma is attached to editions "selling out." We shouldn't fuel that fire anymore than necessary. Some pretty awful images sell out instantaneously, while some great ones don't (imo of course). It's not always/often a refelection of the "quality" of the artist or his/her work, so much as perceived value/profitability and artist reputation/prestige among collectors. The more attention we pay to this stigma in the forums, the less these sales results meri a partt in any art oriented discussion imo.
It seems to have got to the point where any artist whose latest edition doesn't sell out quickly, is deemed to have failed. I think this is totally absurd. Imo many of the artists' work that doesn't sell out sh1ts all over most of what does, in terms of concept, image and execution. In a culture where editions exist to popularise/make accessible this art work, surely these mass-printed editions should represent an opportunity to own an image affordably, as opposed to making an investment, based on the financial success of an artist - we have to look at the damned things on the wall, so if that's all that matters, why not frame money or gold bars (cue the crap new print release by someone trying to be ironic). The whole situation is pretty laughable imo. (Having an opinionated moment this evening - apologies for prattling on)

As heavyconsumer said, there is way to much attached to selling out. If a print immediately sells out does it automatically mean it is better than one that doesn't? Look at some of the best prints of last year - Hush's Graff Geisha Tryptich - still available, McAttee's Galactica - still available, Matt Small's Ahmed - still available...
There are lots more but these three are all outstanding works by arguable three of the best artists in this genre, yet they're not sold out... why's that? Because they aren't flippable, you can't stick them on ebay the next day and make a packet on them...
"It's not good for the artist" if the work isn't an immediate sell out?? I fully disagree, it can be very good for them, how good would it be for an artist if his/her work sold out immediately only to be met with them changing hands not far down the line for way under the retail price affecting the next work the artist does and the work after? Surely that is more damaging to an artist than them not immediately selling out?

Is it a bit boring at the moment?, by Signal Gallery on Jan 29, 2009 12:25:52 GMT 1, Some valid points Heavy Consumer.
I agree though this January is very quiet for shows in the UK. However, Dale Grimshaw's show is still on, with work both inside and outside the gallery. It ends Feb 14th www.signalgallery.com/dalegrimshaw2.htm
Romanywg has a great shot of Dale's outside work on his flickr site too.

Is it a bit boring at the moment?, by crazyarsemother on Jan 29, 2009 12:32:08 GMT 1, I am playing with some ideas for a new screen print, that I may run as the first editioned print to be made in Yesyoucanistan (a brave expantion of the manufacturing base, of the world's biggest importer). From an artist's point of view, the motivation of the print selling out is very low on the priorities. Lots of people would probably not be too bothered either way anway. My motivation is to make a piece of work that is appreciated, provides visual interest and is personally progress.
All that said you will buy it won't you? Won't you?
