Ocontemporary hit by the crisis, by hlarmy on Jan 30, 2009 13:31:56 GMT 1, That is a shame; they were always very helpful and put on some great shows.
However I agree that it was an extremely risky strategy; great location but somewhat ambitious. I'm sure the plans to move to London were well underway before the 'crunch' hit home so quite unlucky as well.
The only time I've been there was for the Titifreak exhibition and, from what I remember, very little sold and IMO very overpriced.

Ocontemporary hit by the crisis, by fielder on Jan 30, 2009 14:35:43 GMT 1, Sorry to hear they have closed. I used to enjoy walking around the gallery in my lunch hour when they were based in Brighton. Have to agree about their stuff being overpriced though. No mention of the closure on their website.

If you miss London and live in Brighton, get the train up occassionally, takes less than an hour, don't move your business to the most expensive area.
If they are bust, can I get a cheap Kevin Sampson original?

Ocontemporary hit by the crisis, by snausages on Jan 30, 2009 17:13:44 GMT 1, I'm surprised more places haven't been hit yet, especially some of the lower quality galleries, I think we need a few more to fold before things will get better.

Ocontemporary hit by the crisis, by Stella Dore on Jan 30, 2009 18:16:09 GMT 1, As a gallery owner I can tell you that it's tough out there..... there are very high costs incurred in setting up a new space and day to day running. Even though we sell a decent amount of work on a daily basis I'm personally skint as hell and sometimes its a real struggle.
So go on - support small galleries so we can keep putting on great shows, provide information on popular artists and help nurture new talent - buy a print from us!!

Ocontemporary hit by the crisis, by olivia on Jan 30, 2009 18:58:32 GMT 1, Hello everyone, someone told me this had been mentioned on here today.
Thanks for all the kind comments, really appreciated.
The sad and simple truth is we were very unlucky with the timing of our long pre-planned relocation. A huge shame but we're very proud of the shows we put on and the artists we worked with, and remain on good terms with them.
For those who are wondering there was negligible stock - as with most galleries it was consigned by the artists (and I and the gallery's staff have been working tirelessly to ensure that everyone had theirs returned to them without a problem).
Thanks for all your support with the gallery, and on this thread. I hope you can continue to support the other galleries and artists this year as it is very, very tough out there.
Wishing everyone the best for 09.
Olivia

Ocontemporary hit by the crisis, by Daniel Silk on Jan 30, 2009 19:05:53 GMT 1, Hi Olivia
Really sad to see it end up this way I was thinking how the move to London would have been a great step forward for the business, but I guess the timing made things very hard.
Im sure everyone here is hoping to see you and all the staff back working in a new Gallery as soon as possible Wait out this downturn, and reopen when the times right.

Ocontemporary hit by the crisis, by fielder on Jan 30, 2009 19:59:24 GMT 1, Just checked their website and they've been closed since December 23rd, saying they are unable to take any new orders until they re-open in Feb - that seems like a very long break without any money coming in!

Ocontemporary hit by the crisis, by fatherxmas on Jan 30, 2009 20:05:52 GMT 1, I was very unlucky not to see the shop in brighton nor the one in London nor have i seen one of your shows that you have put on but from the words of some of the respected members on here it seems like you did a great job. You obviously have an eye for good art and setting up shows etc etc. Im sure you will be headhunted, you would be a treasure to any business with your contacts etc etc. If i was ever to set up a gallery, knowing you aint running ocontempory, you would be my first point of call

Twist the Artists arm's into doing some low priced- high editions for folk with less cash to spend, yet still loving art. Less per unit profit, more in volume ;D ;D
The above is not say you don't do a great a job, just thinking out loud. And no escaping the fact people have less spending money??
