lost the passion..., by lukedixon on Jan 16, 2009 1:25:03 GMT 1, The past 4-6 weeks have been pretty tough for various reasons...but since things have started to calm down, I've lost a bit of passion to get up and get some artwork produced, or even started any thought process beyond my drawings.
buuut, surprisingly I've been given a grant to 'enhance my studies' - which includes books, travel, visiting exhibitions and materials. Now in student terms, this is a decent amount of pound coins - but apparently i need to spend it wisely (but not as my wise mother put it 'don't you dare buy a 100 bottles of johnnie walker black label')...
so i need a art kick up the arse, get my juices flowing again. So without me doing any of the research work, i thought i'd come to you knowledgeable folk... what are the best books to buy at the moment? and the best exhibitions that are coming up in the next few weeks?

lost the passion..., by Oliver Winconek on Jan 16, 2009 11:16:42 GMT 1, I think it's important not to surround yourself with too many books of other peoples artwork at the moment, I would spend the money you have on materials, experiment like mad and try everything, do things out of your comfort zone and never resist an influence. Good luck with it all

lost the passion..., by crazyarsemother on Jan 16, 2009 11:49:34 GMT 1, Hi Luke, Firstly, I am afraid it gets much tougher but equally more rewarding.
Everyone is different. Think what turns you on, what gets your creative juices going and don't feel constrained. College should get you active. Go to every lecture, every workshop and everything going. Go out, gt drunk. Meet people. Get off the computer.
Money does not buy creativity.
Personally, I am visually responsive. If I had a grant I would not think of materials or studio or anything like that I would get away. Visit a new and exciting place. Sketch, record, document but people are very different.

Forgot to thank you for the portrait and other bits you sent before Christmas. Thanks!
I think art history can be quite inspiring, rather than books with just contemporary artist's work.

That's some very good advice. even if you can't make it to the coast, get yourself out into the countryside and do some big long walks. Nothing like nature to reinvigorate the soul.

lost the passion..., by lukedixon on Jan 16, 2009 14:27:53 GMT 1, some very sound advice, appreciate the feedback. but this is a reimbursement grant and 2 weeks drawing in india won't work with them....trust me I've tried! so i have to show some kind development through research blah blah...you know. Which isn't all bad, because im the kind of person to get really inspired from seeing other artists work. so in others words, if im involved with the right art and find my self in the right frame of mind.
I personally want to move to cuba, grow a jim morrison beard, drink whiskey and paint. but i doubt this grant covers that either!

but in all seriousness fella your work is looking spot on at the minute. klingatron is doing stuff very similar, you both have far to much patience for my liking.

Ha ha I'm sorry, will have to turn you down on that one Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. I must admit that it's down to you and Rourke that I have started drawing again, it had been a while, so easy to get swept up in stencil work and lose the skill. I will post some of my drawings soon

lost the passion..., by loucastel on Jan 17, 2009 22:33:58 GMT 1, Hi Luke, books are OK, but they have been written by someone else with their ideas, you obviously need to find your own way, get a digi camera, wlak around where you live, take a train ,bus or whatever to some big city's and just click away, taking pics of nothing in particular, dont think too hard about the shot, just take it, download them onto your computer, then do a bit of studying, but dont just look at them, look INTO them, see what is in the background, foreground, people etc, you just might see something that gives you that bit of inspiration, if nothing else you have had a fun time taking some pics, doubt if this will do any good for you, but hope it does.

loucastel - i think a decent digital slr is first on the list, definitely feel working from various situations is the way forward.
