Has the contemporary art market collapsed?, by thebaroness on Jan 6, 2009 2:36:40 GMT 1, I was wondering what others think about how the credit crunch is going to effect the art market and are we now already witnessing the demise of the whole contemporary art โmarketโ. I personally hope so. It would appear that like the housing market, the current art market was built on a fantasy and greed. How could a screen print by a living artist ever really be worth so much, so quickly? The same people, who invested in the buy to let, were ready to snap up the latest โcelebrityโ artist in the knowledge that it would be worth so much more the following week. We let the city boys and hedge fund managers become the proprietors of good taste. People who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. What did they buy? Hirst by the sack load. Crappy spatter paintings and DIY spot paintings that were made by some studio assistant, half I hear have now been redundant the week before Xmas. So what goes up must come down. The bubble has finally burst. .Just how much is Dan Baldwin/Nick Walker/D*Face really worth. If you brought their work because you really love it and wanted the pleasure of it in your home then the question doesnโt really matter. A piece of art is worth what any one else is prepared to pay for it. If you brought is as an investment, then you could soon be fucked. The big question is how fast will the speculators bail? Maybe this months auctions and art fairs will show how weak the current art market really is. Personally I think we are moving into a period of realignment, where the art market, like the housing market will readjust itself to reflect its true worth. I myself am quite happy to start bartering and swapping my work . At the Mutate Britain Show I swapped several of my ceramic pieces and now have work by Joe Rush, Giles Walker, and Lyle Dog in my new art collection - although Maia Hirst paid cash my ceramics plates.

Has the contemporary art market collapsed?, by arcam on Jan 6, 2009 5:55:14 GMT 1, What do you think id going to happen to most markets when businesses are going bust left right and centre, and lots of people are being made unemployed, do you think people are going to spend lots of money on non essential things ? Its f**ks me off if I am honest. Who cares about the value of art, if you could afford to pay over ยฃ500 for a print then you are/were not doing too bad compared to alot of people In fairness Manty if you've been made unemployed then you care quite a lot.

Decided to delete my inane post Sorry

Has the contemporary art market collapsed?, by thebaroness on Jan 6, 2009 9:39:50 GMT 1, Sorry, I am new to this forum lark, and didnt realise there were already many posts on the same subject. I do care very much about this actually. I believe that we need to shift to consuming less and the credit crunch is really going kick in during 2009 and wondered how people felt this would effect the art market. I myself have never really been a very 'bankable' artist seeing as I spent most of my time sticking tiles and ceramics to my own house which clearly is not for sale. But I feel there will be a shift towards high end craft and traditional type art and wanted to know what others thought.

Has the contemporary art market collapsed?, by robinbanks on Jan 6, 2009 10:35:22 GMT 1, Was a fairly well written post... until the blatant plug at the end.
Unfortunately your subversive marketing technique is a lot like your original point - many of us on here have seen it all before.
Nice cans though - just whack em in an artists thread if you wanna drum up a bit of business - I think you might do alright.

Has the contemporary art market collapsed?, by chablis on Jan 6, 2009 10:51:45 GMT 1, Hi Baroness
I have one of your pieces, and it is a piece of sh1t....
Well it's actually a ceramic dog turd bought at the summer Art Car Boot for a quid (nice to meet to you there by the way).
Ignore the detactors they forget that people are entitled to an opinion, and that artists are entitled to the odd bit of self promotion. You do have to expect a certain amount of criticism thouh if you express a view that goes against the 'ideal'.
Wecome to the forum.

Has the contemporary art market collapsed?, by Curley on Jan 6, 2009 11:07:12 GMT 1, Cant believe we have yet another thread on this subject Maybe time for another thread on flipping, crap art
If you buy what you like then there's no problem with values as most things in life depreciate in value, nothing is guaranteed to make money (not even property it seems)
If on the other hand you paid silly money on E bay or on secondary market as you thought was a good investment then you are looking at losing money as the market corrects itself from its over inflated artificial high of the last few years. Some artists are going to feel this correction more than others and the quality will rise to the top and the dross will sink with out trace.
Ill be interested to see where most of the so called artists on this forum are in 5 years time. One or two may make a career but my money is most will drop by the way side. It reminds of the 90's when everyone thought they were a DJ

That may be so but I've many pieces that cost around ยฃ40 which is hardly luxury spending.
Hello Baroness nice to see you here and how ironic that on a forum obsessed with money talk you're getting the reception you are, try asking about art they'll all be chatting credit crunching financial double speak then.

Only if you are in it for the money
A bit of paper on your wall is still a bit of paper on your wall, irrespective of how much people value it

Actually not sure about that. Craft by good potters (Mike Dodd, Phil Rogers etc) always seems to do ok. Chris Prindl does some great work too (IMO - recently bought some thumb cups which look great and work well!)
