Music, Fashion and the scene, by crazyarsemother on Jan 6, 2009 22:23:06 GMT 1, Think I must be missing the academic side of my art degree but I wondered if anyone had any references for material discussing the cross over of the above? I am not sure if anyone else listened to the recent Malcolm Maclaren documentary on music and culture but it has had a real ressinence. I recently bought bought a book on Japanese fashion too which I can't put down.
I am also interested in how people view this scene (post 2000) and its similarities to other 'underground' movements. I know people have referred to punk but that is a culture that I am not too familiar with. The work's shift into the mainstream has been an interesting progression and forums like this also seem significant in rescinating the new DIY culture of the artist. This seems to have already happened in the music seen. Is art to follow?
Anyway, I like a good discussion on here and the forum is what we make it so in 50 words - please discuss

Jon Savage Englands Dreaming is a great book on punk etc. Personally I see creativity in fashion & music pretty moribund in comparison to street art at the moment. There hasn't been a decent clothing youth movement for years, whereas the energy that you previously had there is definately present in the street art arena

Music, Fashion and the scene, by Sliding on the Walls on Jan 7, 2009 20:13:48 GMT 1, When I wrote my dissertation I found a book by Dick Hebdige very useful. It was called Subculture: The Meaning Of Style, which basically covered a variety of subcultures and 'movements' in the UK in the last 20 years. As it was written in the 1980s it coveres punk in great detail, but it's interesting to draw comparissons with that movement, to other styles that have evolved subsequently.
Also a book called 'Branded' by Gareth Williams made an interesting read, about how people can feel associated and have affinities with a particular brand name... e.g. you buy a coke and know that you're drinking the same coke that the hollywood A listers drink, one step closer towards the aspirational lifestyle. (not that I agree with that shite of course)
My dissertation was about 'club/rave culture' (e.g. Gatecrasher, Cream, Hacienda etc...) and how it influenced branding, merchendising and consequentially fashion, music and even language in our society
