Is Bigger Better?, by slowmo on Jan 3, 2009 0:01:22 GMT 1, Last year something happened. People went large. But was even half of it any good? Will 2008 be the year that large scale stuff went mad. Is the Tate modern and an increasingly willing base of legal wall lenders to blame? IS bigger better?
Thinking back, A3 stencilled rats I discovered hanging around in unexpected places done far more for me. But I think its a good area for debate. Please discuss, have artists traded hard hitting immediate images for large scale pieces which are impressive but once scale is taken out, have less impact?

Is Bigger Better?, by Simococo on Jan 3, 2009 0:13:06 GMT 1, isn't it just a sign of the times, with a need to create more powerful "brands" in a seemingly saturated arena.

Is Bigger Better?, by Gurn on Jan 3, 2009 0:14:07 GMT 1, I think it's all about placement..I also have a soft spot for those little rats, but had there only been one of them it would have paled in significance alongside his other works. The fact that there were many gave them a bigger meaning..for me,the large NY rats and the Nick Walker pieces were just adverts with more appeal to the US than the more modest taste of Brits. The only street artists that work on a grand scale for me are blu and Eine.

Is Bigger Better?, by hero on Jan 3, 2009 0:32:18 GMT 1, i think with a street piece it is more impressive if it is big, but at the end of the day its all about placement, but life sized is always very impressive.
ive been told that in terms of prints...bigger is better in both urban and classical scenes, even though it costs more to frame

Is Bigger Better?, by Daniel Silk on Jan 3, 2009 2:38:44 GMT 1, A lot of competition on the streets this year, with all the Artists trying to out do each other Yeah, it seems most have gone for the bigger is better but in some ways doing large numbers of small pieces if good coz at least they then have a better chance on not getting removed so fast. Maybe 2009 will be totally different and an Artist will appear with a new way of doing things that we ain't seen before ;D

Is Bigger Better?, by onemandown72 on Jan 3, 2009 14:57:43 GMT 1, For me it depends on the piece & location. Good example is the recent change from the Blu piece by POW to the newer piece. For me the new work is pretty poor, and actually looks unfinished. This in total contrast to that Blu piece that preceded it. Personally I prefer larger pieces, I see it a far greater challenge to pull off larger pieces. For one you are working so close to the area that it must be so much harder to achieve a great finish.

Is Bigger Better?, by remirough on Jan 3, 2009 18:27:51 GMT 1, Bigger is not always better... but I've been working large scale for all my painting life, and not about to scale down now for anyone... Here's the bridge, Stormie and I did in Australia last summer... uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RPoCSrbZV1s

Don;t forget il canes contribution. It'd be considerbly less than half as good without him.
But, yes, the piece that's been painted over that is an abomination.
