Before or After?, by Rene Gagnon on Jan 3, 2009 16:07:51 GMT 1, hello all, hope everyone had a safe holiday, i just got back from costa rica (head high to double overhead glass every morning ;D ) on a much needed surf vacation, void of anything art related, which was good. anyway had a question? i have a big solo show in 6 months here in the states, "big" meaning its a beautiful large gallery that is being handed over to me to fill. this show is the first time i'll be creating a complete body of work centered around a theme.
curious to know how people feel about artists revealing the work or some of the work that will be in the show, before the actual show? i've seen both. does it ruin the surprise?

Before or After?, by simpo on Jan 3, 2009 16:58:19 GMT 1, Given the amount of people from the uk on this forum i imagine 'before' is going to get the vote, but could be wrong!
Personally i have no issue seeing artwork before however those attending may have a different opinion... possibly if your new work centres on a new theme/style then a bit of suspense could be good?
Good luck with the show by the way

Before or After?, by Dellboyy on Jan 3, 2009 18:41:05 GMT 1, Isn't it usual to show a few pieces as a preview, then keep the rest for the people who turn up?
Of course i wouldn't have a great deal against showing everything up front! ;D

Before or After?, by speebe on Jan 3, 2009 20:57:07 GMT 1, I think it's good to provide a teaser and also build interest etc
In the flesh the artwork always throws up hidden facets not illustrated in the photos, and thus keeps the show/exhibition fresh.
As long as you're prepared to stick to your guns and not be swayed by the comments of forum members, i'd say go for it.
A seasoned artist like you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Before or After?, by romanywg on Jan 4, 2009 0:02:46 GMT 1, A few teasers but only parts of complete works. In my mind nothing complete should be shown ahead of the show. Sickboy did that recently and I thought the show was going to be absolutely amazing. But the 2 pieces that were shown were far and away the best pieces there. So I felt a little deflated.

Even though I won't make the show unfortunately (in Scotland) I like to see photo's of the pieces in the show when it opens. Always a fan and owner of some of your canvas'. Lookin forward to the teasers Rene...
