New Years Resolution, by hlarmy on Dec 23, 2008 22:23:49 GMT 1, What is your New Years resolution when it comes to art?
Do you plan on spending more or less (esp. given the low interest rates)? Do you want to increase or decrease your collection? etc.
On a personal front, I simply can't afford to spend as much in 2009 as I did in 2008 - my problem is I can resist everything but temptation! I plan on giving a lot more thought on what I buy as although I've bought some great art in the past 12 months, I've also bought quite a few bits that will never make the wall.
I'd also like to move away from prints and originals on canvas, and build my interest in sculptures and photography.
Any thoughts?

Make sure you get your red star if you do
On a serious note, there are going to be loads of bargains in 2009 to be had so if you have the cash, hold tight as it could be an exciting year as prices continue to fall and those previously out of your range will suddenly become more affordable ;D (IMO of course)

New Years Resolution, by Deleted on Dec 23, 2008 23:32:44 GMT 1, I to spent to much on art in 2008, I'm skint now:( , my taste has changed/matured over 2008, as i became more aware of other artists , I'm hoping to spend half what i did in 2008, but you know what it's like you see something you like and your plans go out of the window, and if i spend any more cash on art before i sell a few pieces i will end up losing my house,so if you see a bloke sleeping on the street with some paper and cardboard as his home, take a closer look and you might see that on the cardboard there are some Adam Neate paintings and on the paper the odd Nick Walker print

New Years Resolution, by rosstierney on Dec 23, 2008 23:39:12 GMT 1, we're coming to the end of my first year collecting & i'd like to think i'm less impulsive & have a better idea of what i like/dislike
i need to cleanse my collection of early impulsive purchases
i need to learn to let go of pieces if financially required
i want to concentrate on my favourite artists & fine tune my collection
maybe i'll seek my first commission?
i foresee a few secondary market bargains
and finally, i don't class myself as an artist but i'd like to take an idea or two to the street

New Years Resolution, by Baxter Orr on Dec 23, 2008 23:41:48 GMT 1, I am getting to the place where I would rather buy one piece a year that I absolutely love for a lot of money than to have loads of cheaper prints tucked in all corners of my apartment, I want to only buy art I really want to keep around for years, that is my goal for 2009.

Me too; it may be difficult seeing my more treasured pieces are hanging in my parents house (who are both becoming bigger fans of Banksy than I am!).
I certainly plan on reducing the quantity of my collection and upping the quality; one of the things I love about collecting art is you can always improve your collection

New Years Resolution, by lee3 on Dec 29, 2008 17:22:54 GMT 1, I don't have a resolution per say but '09 will be unique in the decade that we've been collecting. We've always bought what we love and that will never change. Truthfully, we'll probably spend less on art in the near future and look to purchase a home instead over the next 18 months. I don't' anticipate any downsizing of our collection but now is the time imo to grab that which you've always loved that you previously couldn't afford assuming of course you can part with the cash. I think we all need to be more careful with our money but there will be gems that none of us can ignore at all different price levels. There are just two images, one in particular, that we're focusing our attention towards though we're not in any hurry.
Patience will probably be rewarded which unfortunately has never been my strong point with this hobby. Still, I think we can all set our sights high with respect to what we've traditionally bought and be honest with what we're' willing to spend and we'll all probably be pleasantly surprised at what we're able to buy.
I would not want to be a seller at the moment however because even a motivated one may have difficulty given the climate. And you still have to ask yourself what if now is the best time to sell something over the next 5 years? I just don't know and therefore it comes full circle to the "I'm not going to sell anything but I'll buy that which I just can't say no to."

New Years Resolution, by Standard on Dec 29, 2008 17:27:17 GMT 1, Will be looking to buy one or two (or three maybe four) carefully planned pieces but most of the funds will be going towards a diamond. The easy achievable one will be hitting the gym on a regular basis.

New Years Resolution, by onemandown72 on Dec 29, 2008 17:31:38 GMT 1, I was thinking about my obsession with art, and how I would like to harness it last night. I see next year (and towards the end) as a golden opportunity, to buy at the best value, for a long time. To this end I am going to try and save enough to allow me one fantastic purchase. I intend to keep all of said savings hard to access, thus removing the temptation for snap spontaneous art purchases. For me I would be more than happy with just one knock out beauty that I can savour, look at, lose myself in and truly marvel at.

New Years Resolution, by mose on Dec 29, 2008 18:13:09 GMT 1, I reduced both my collection and my art spending in 2008. Dramatically. Went from 100+ pieces to 15 of what I consider to be good quality from the artists I enjoy the most. Still have some trimming to do, probably down to 5 pieces or so, to raise the quality level to excellent instead of just good. I have only 4 pieces that were purchased in 2008 and none are likely to survive the next purge.
For 2009, I have 5 artists who I would like to obtain a piece from, a budget for each, and will patiently wait for the sweet spot where interest and price meet. If it happens in 2009, fine, if not I'll keep waiting while not spending a dime on anything other than art books, which I mainly buy used.

That's very disciplined of you Mose. Congratulations, I know how hard it must have been to trim down the collection like that.
