Banksy Blanked, by alsbabar on Dec 23, 2008 17:36:11 GMT 1, Banksyโs blanked!
22nd December 2008
IT used to be a classic Banksy but people are now jokingly calling it a Blanksy. The guerilla artistโs famous stencilled maid in Chalk Farm Road, Chalk Farm, has had another rough week and there are fears that, this time, she might not pull through. The artwork on a wall close to the Roundhouse theatre was whitewashed on Saturday by vandals who left the words โBanksy Was Here. RIPโ scrawled in the open space. The attack bore similarities to the maidโs whitewashing in February, which led to a meticulous repair job. Dame Joan Bakewell, a massive Banksy fan who lives nearby in Primrose Hill, said: โYou have to say that Banksy has this sort of thing coming to him. He defies all the laws and so he cannot have protection from others who exercise the same freedom. He has made a marvellous jest and so I am sad, but also smiling.โ Camden Council has already proved to be a fan of the graffiti artist, having made enquiries to get insurance for a rat etched into the Town Hall buildings in Kingโs Cross. Officials have already been working on the wall to see if the layers of paint can be removed and the original art restored. โAfter a call from the Roundhouse we did assist them in removing the emulsion painted on the side of their building,โ said a council spokeswoman.

Banksy Blanked, by snakes on Dec 23, 2008 18:36:55 GMT 1, It's graffiti for f**ks sake they are not meant to last forever which is half the pleasure of it. Paint over it and maybe something equally good or if not better will take its place such as has happened at the spot on Old Street where Pulp used to be.

Banksy Blanked, by snakes on Dec 23, 2008 18:39:15 GMT 1, Ps Banksy has been happy to paint on other peoples things during his whole career so I am sure he will not be too miffed that someone has done the same to one of his old street pieces.

Banksy Blanked, by alsbabar on Dec 23, 2008 19:23:46 GMT 1, to me its a shame that another great piece is lost - but f**k it, wont bother posting information like this again, if this is the reaction - lets instead start another thread about someone selling something on ebay or about VLH

Banksy Blanked, by hero on Dec 23, 2008 19:25:15 GMT 1, i think that it was removed more because it was attracting other graffiti, and the cost of restoration or a screen was too great

Banksy Blanked, by muti on Dec 23, 2008 19:32:33 GMT 1, I used to walk past her every day, there were always people taking pictures. I know it's the nature of the game and new work will always replace existing pieces but I do feel a bit sad. I still don't know why the Roundhouse just didn't cover it with a sheet of perspex like VLH?

Banksy Blanked, by They call me Stephen on Dec 23, 2008 19:40:38 GMT 1, it is a shame alsbabar however the piece seen in the above photo has been painted over so many times that i doubt any of the picture is from the original.
this piece has been vandalised/painted over on numerous occasions and not just the face. what makes banksy worthy of repairing and another artist not?? "camden council being supposed fans"...c u n t s...fans of what, financial gain or art??
it is the nature of the game unfortunately and as sad as i am to see it gone it's a call to arms for street artists to put something else up in it's place.

Banksy Blanked, by muti on Dec 23, 2008 19:48:39 GMT 1, I was on the piss ages ago in Camden and it was a Friday evening and a council truck that had been repairing the road was parked beside the wall and these two huge Eastern European guys were spraying the face black with whatever it was they were using to mark the road. I approached the one guy and got into a bit of a verbal with him and it was very clear he had no idea that what he was doing was wrong and also had no idea who Banksy was, why should he? I left it at that and a few days later the wall had been painted white and the black paint had been removed and the face looked brand new. The council had apparantly sorted it.

Banksy Blanked, by curiousgeorge on Dec 23, 2008 19:52:47 GMT 1, Of the very few rules about street art, one that is hard and fast is that it's transient*
This does not mean i am happy when Banksy stuff gets buffed/removed

Banksy Blanked, by neale on Dec 23, 2008 21:42:11 GMT 1, Much as I love Banksy, graffitti is graffitti, and by its nature has a limited life, let it go , if it was meant to last for ever it would be in the Tate surrounded by security guards, dont be so bloody precious!!

Banksy Blanked, by kennas on Dec 23, 2008 22:47:54 GMT 1, Sad to see a great piece go, but for me it is intrinsic to the appeal. It has to be transient and evolve. The pictures will no doubt be there forever. I would be interested to know what % of the pieces in wall and peace survive today. Very few I'd guess.....
