how do you float a print in a frame?, by Michael Jacob on Dec 17, 2008 20:15:42 GMT 1, what kind of glue or adhesive do you use to float a print? I want it strong enough to last forever, but also not to do any irreversible damage if it needs to get removed. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

how do you float a print in a frame?, by slowmo on Dec 17, 2008 20:18:03 GMT 1, Japanese paper mate. Don't know much, but that always comes up in conversation when floating is mentioned, no idea how it is applied. Or gaffer tape rolled round so you have a sticky hoop

how do you float a print in a frame?, by snapwolfe on Dec 17, 2008 20:31:40 GMT 1, floating is usually better left to the professionals, but if you have to do it yourself, here are a couple hints. you hear about japanese paper... it is really just a handmade, totally acid-free paper with very fibrous qualities. the process is called hinging. you take a small piece of said paper and fold it in half. you mount on side of the the "hinge" to your print with an acid-free adhesive. www.archivalusa.com/mad4.html this stuff works well then you use a little buffer that you can remove (wax paper works) and place it between the two halves of the hinge. then apply the adhesive to the other side of the hinge and mount it to the acid-free board. that is the gist of it. im sure mr frame man can give you the finer points if you ask.

how do you float a print in a frame?, by howlinjack on Dec 17, 2008 20:46:17 GMT 1, japanese hinging is by all accounts the best but i found this self adhesive tape called filmoplast P90. below is an article on how it works and how you can remove it. personally i'd leave float mounting to the pros. i intend to have a crack at it one day but not with anything too special in case i screw up.
www.artfacts.org/artinfo/articals/water_removal_filmoplast.html
anyone else heard of/used any of this? be good to hear a framers perspective.

how do you float a print in a frame?, by curiousgeorge on Dec 17, 2008 21:52:42 GMT 1, Starch paste and Japanese hinging paper (not all brands are equal)
It's not for joe public to go out and try on expensive art,if as an artist you frame bits now and then, then it's worth giving it a go (on inexpensive art)
Using the right brands and techniques can leave it totally reversible and damage free
People often say is it strong enough, but what you really want is for the hinge to be the weakest point.Should anything fall of the wall the hinge will break LONG before any heavy paper stock
Send me a pm CJ and i will link you to some places in the States, you have a vast database of knowledge on pure archival framing in the way of years of experience of some VERY knowledgeable framers

how do you float a print in a frame?, by neale on Dec 17, 2008 22:22:07 GMT 1, You can use acid free tabs, which you should be able to get from any framer or framing supply shop, if your in London try Simons, think its on Essex Rd .Just put one in each corner, and extra on the sides if its a big print. DONT use any type of glue or regular tape, it will mark the print in time

how do you float a print in a frame?, by funyoung on Dec 17, 2008 23:40:31 GMT 1, I don't actually float mount the prints. I put the print on the wall and then float mount the frame on top and behind. Works much better I find. Best of luck.

how do you float a print in a frame?, by m0n0t0ne on Dec 18, 2008 19:58:35 GMT 1, just received the book today has a lot of good detailed info, but not as much on hinging. It does explain how many hinges to use depending on size of art but I wish they were a bit more descriptive.
