I believe Sotheby's is putting on a bit of a front... trying to keep the markets as calm as possible for their own sakes

Without a doubt; it's their business so it's certainly in their interest to try and inject some confidence in the market - especially given the massive drop in their share price in recent months! Desperate times. Looking forward to the February auctions as it'll be interesting to see where the market is - a great time for collectors (not so much sellers)

Contemporary Art Market: A Candid Look from the In, by slowmo on Dec 19, 2008 10:54:44 GMT 1, I guess they are saying we can't sell shit to morons anymore! Looks like contemporary has a long way to drop and even then it will be old money buying to feel as though they are diversifying their portfolio.
So expect to see a lot of the greatest contemporary work held by self made financiers being sold and the money made being put right back into the 'old mansion houses' if you like of impressionism which, after all, sit very well in the houses of those who were born without ever having to work and have a track record over decades rather than years.

Contemporary Art Market: A Candid Look from the In, by onemandown72 on Dec 19, 2008 11:30:13 GMT 1, I watched this before coming on here this morning, and whilst it didn't tell you anything that isn't clearly obvious, it was pretty refreshing to see Sotheby's put this together and send out. They're being pretty sensible in reinforcing the point to sellers not to expect too much at auction, which clearly makes their lives easier on setting estimates and managing the sales.
