A love of prints, by dynamixx on Dec 15, 2008 18:40:32 GMT 1, Has anyone here ever had the realisation that our love of prints might be a bit silly?
I know a post like this might seem akin to going on to a knitting forum or somesuch, and saying hang on guys, is it just me or is knitting actually a bit shit? But bear with me.
Have you ever tried to explain to someone from outside of the scene why a particular print is so special? And tried to justify the cost or value of what to them is a volume produced, pretty poster at best? In the midst of my print infatuation I would think, ha you poor unenlightened philistines, but I'm starting to wonder if these civilians might have a point.
This might be my mind trying to numb the pain of missing out on the last three Banksy releases, two of which by a whisker, and passing on numerous pre-hype/LA B prints and originals when I was a little more cash strapped. But the question remains, is our idolatry of prints, and the desire for ownership a bit silly? Aren't we risking forgetting that a love of the art bought us all here in the first place?
My favourite street piece of all time is the Banksy Old Street angel, and seeing it recently stopped me in my tracks and put a lot into perspective for me.
When all you want to do is consume new shiny things, the more unatainable the new shiny things are, the greater your unfulfilled desire for new shiny things becomes. If you don't consume, you might feel a pang of remorse. If you do, you get a brief rush, which last until the next object of desire comes along. It's a loop which doesn't feel very soul nourishing.
For me at least, it could be time to take a step back.

A love of prints, by chrisps303 on Dec 15, 2008 20:13:01 GMT 1, Thats a good post dynamixx.
I don't know if I am feeling the same way and just don't know it yet, I was disappointed to miss out on the last 2 banksy releases but no where near as gutted as I have felt when I missed previous releases. I suppose I am seeing them just as something nice rather than something I need to have. Its comes down to that whole wanting something rather than needing it if that makes sense.
