Art to look forward to next year, by onemandown72 on Dec 4, 2008 17:49:49 GMT 1, Whlist on my sick bed with cold I have cheered myself up by thinking about potential shows/work by artists, I am loking forward to seeing next year.
On my list is
Matt Small - the new 3D pieces look like a brilliant development Vhils - what else can he treat us to after teasing us at Cans / Stolen Space & the Outsiders Neate - Will he show away from our shores? Parla - What more from the master? Conor Harrington - What next for his eye, away from old military figures? Banksy - the man surprises as always, what could top Cans next year? Museums & major galleries, will anyone follow the Tate's lead? Faile - New iconography away from native indians? New style? Where will street art go stylistically, who new is going to catch the eye.
Thoughts most welcome, where are we going and what will we see?

Art to look forward to next year, by Heavyconsumer on Dec 4, 2008 20:37:29 GMT 1, Cyclops has a show at BRP I think, the new print is stunning. Defo one for the calender.
Check out his work at the Hong Kong show banksyforum.proboards82.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=29251
Wish you better OMD.
Artists I'm most excited about for the coming year are:
Banksy (who knows what he might come up with next!?!),
Dale Grimshaw (some amazing pieces produced for the sketchbook project recently and a new solo show soon at Signal),
Choe (even though some of his work can be a tad hit and miss imo, I've found his work's development and adventurousness exciting so far over the past year or 2, a truly multi-talented artist)
Denning (love the depth and power of his work and it actually seems to be improving, while retaining the hallmarks that make it his. This last show had some amazing work)
and last but certainly not least, Vhils (his decollage piece at Graffle and the contribution at Cans were contenders for the most exciting pieces of the year for me).
I'm also looking forward eagerly to seeing what some of our very own "resident talents" such as Rourke, Neverwork, DOC and Grafter come up with next year. There has been some strong work from them this year imho (Make a wish, Eskimo kid and Splash, DOC's work at Edge, Rourke's continuous toiling on distinctive new ideas and sharing them and Neverworks experimental approach to media and variety of subjects all tackled with great skill) and I'm hoping they will all up their creativity, production and notoriety even more in the coming year.

Art to look forward to next year, by bradpitt on Dec 4, 2008 21:08:36 GMT 1, Mr Banksy everytime, he has the world watching his next moves. The past year we have had Bethlehem, New Orleans, London, NY, raising awareness along the way to some much needed places and organising the years best street events. In fact the whole POW camp and LAZ shows are always guaranteed to satisfy.
I am also looking forward to enjoying more shows in general and getting back to realising what is good in the scene, as it is not just about what you hang on your wall.
Hope that didn't sound too gay

Not gay at all, what other artists, styles, developments?

Art to look forward to next year, by bradpitt on Dec 4, 2008 21:31:39 GMT 1, I hope that Maclaim keep doing their thing and would really love them to come over to the UK. I hope for Herakut to carry on with their success and always enjoy seeing new work. I'd like to get to Nuart too as that looked great this year. I am really enjoying Conor Harrington and think he has killed it with the military theme and shouldn't go too abstract (not too keen on some of the current works at Laz). I think Choe is an amazing talent, but can be very hit or miss - hope he continues with work like at the Laz show this year and I personally think he could be one of the greats. Just hoping for more good art and less of the bad, please no more have a go heros trying to sell stuff. I also really hope prices continue to stay steady/go down at source, I can't justify over inflated prices for sub standard work. I want my artists to work hard and be deserving of what they get.

Art to look forward to next year, by onemandown72 on Dec 4, 2008 21:41:43 GMT 1, Funny as I prefer Conor's abstract work, and I'm also not a huge Choe fan, which is the beauty of art. I think stylistically I'd like to see more street artist's challenge themselves by working both on and off the street, as to make this jump is pretty hard, and not only stretches the artist but shows their talent.

Probably my favourite of the street artists in here at the moment and someone who seems to want to challenge himself and explore different styles. Should have put him on my list too.

Art to look forward to next year, by uksnowman on Dec 4, 2008 22:25:11 GMT 1, Nice post onemandown, good to see a bit of art discussion for a change. Ironic as it is on a forum like this
Agree with a lot of what's been said so far. I'm looking forward to see what Micallef comes up with in '09. I think his work was way undervalued 12 months ago even before the credit crunch hit.
Between him and Choe, (imho) they have more artistic talent in one (maybe two) of their fingers than a decent number of artists regularly discussed on these boards. I also think some of Choe's stuff can be a bit hit and miss, hope he continues to spread his wings next year.
Having said all that, the two words I'm most looking forward to in '09 are "Adam" and "Neate".
In general I'd like to see less skulls, wings and weapons in 09 too!

Art to look forward to next year, by junkieart on Dec 4, 2008 22:45:14 GMT 1, I personally think Rourke will be one to watch, in the wider more established world - Parla, AN, Case, Grimshaw, Herakut (I know I said the last exhib was a bit dark for me but still amazing). and of course Mr B as he never stops amazing me.
Bit of a bummer that most of these artists are way beyond my means but still looking forward to seeing great art. Peace JA

This is an angle I'm definately on, what can these street guys do to show how they are artists first and foremost, with the street just one area that they can express themselves in

Art to look forward to next year, by slowmo on Dec 4, 2008 23:58:10 GMT 1, I hope the have a go heroes find their groove and blow this very middle class, sold my Banksy print now I can afford some real art originals attitude out the water.
Nothing wrong with having a go and that includes trying to sell it, as long as it has something to say and expresses it well. Not a rant, just an observation, let anyone make art, dont run them down for it.

Art to look forward to next year, by bradpitt on Dec 5, 2008 0:34:37 GMT 1, Hey Slowmo, I agree everyone should have a go, I do myself but not keen on artists selling anything and everything, it shouldn't be a business, it should be having a go for the love of it. Most big name artists put the work in for years to achieve where they are and have given us a lot along the way. I'm looking forward to more passion behind the art and less grab the money and run.

Art to look forward to next year, by Heavyconsumer on Dec 5, 2008 4:01:13 GMT 1, I think Beejoir will come back strong in 2009 with some superb stuff
Gone out of my way to avoid saying this in the forum, but I haven't seen anyone else say it and I would like to see whether I'm alone in this or people agree... So here goes...
Beejoir put out some fantastic images in 2007 imo (I have in mind LVC and Turin Scam). In 2008 I feel he lost that momentum. He went a little experimental with Blurry Mary, for which I respected him, but that was where the original work seemed to tail off and was the message new, or something he's already done on more than one occasion before? There were the statues too of course, but the concept wasn't new, it was a rework (for want of a better term). However he received huge backing from Neil and Ged as well as many artists, by request of many of us here (myself included) in supporting the charity of his choice, to help recoup something of his lost earnings in the nasty LSG fiasco. I feel he failed to repay that good faith. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not having a dig at Chris as a person (I can't, I don't know him), but the doodles and stoned midnight ramblings (or whatever he called them) he offered up were quite simply embarassing when compared to the efforts of the other artists involved imho. A lost opportunity to make a statement (perhaps about a charity he is clearly passionate for).
I'd love to see Beejoir back to his best. Screaming from the roof-tops about what he feels is wrong with the world by putting the message into bold, clear, attractive, visual terms. I hope you're right. However I'm not convinced he will be back with anything fresh anytime soon (I hope I'm wrong).

Art to look forward to next year, by jB on Dec 5, 2008 4:53:04 GMT 1, only time will tell -- but if I was a betting man, I would put some earnings on some great things coming out of him in 09 --
I sure hope so -- I know he has the potential and that 'fuck the world' mentality that I love so much

Art to look forward to next year, by manty on Dec 5, 2008 10:10:11 GMT 1, I like posts like this, and threads like this also.
I haven't really followed beejoir, There hasnt been anything i really like apart from a business man on a cross which was really big and cool at the the TLSG show i went to, but i was pissed, and bought a bloody Bast Smurf showing off his willy, which the wife made me cancel
Anyhow I agree with most of the above posts artist wise, especially guys like replete and SPQR who hopefully will produce some great stuff next year
Micallef i think has gone way beyond us mere mortals collection wise apart from the odd print, and I still wonder how he falls under this 'urban art' banner.
Neate is my fav, and i do hope he gets to do a show abroad somewhere like Australia :-) or even the States.
Choe will always turn out good stuff, i dont even think the guy needs to think too much about what he paints, its just natural to him, and he is far above most other artists
Blu is the Man, I love his stuff, and would like him to paint my house for free
I do think this whole scene will quieten down a huge amount, where alot of speculators will leave it and focus on something else.

First time I've seen this opinion, I think you're spot on. Artists output won't decrease, but speculator's interest most likely will.

Quite possibly - but I really wanted to just keep this to what will be on offer from an art perspective as opposed to any mention of filthy lucre
