NYC, by Eton Groover on Nov 25, 2008 22:36:12 GMT 1, Going to New York in a few days for a long weekend and I am staying in the Rivington in the Lower East Side.
Could any New York based forum members, or regular visitors, recommend great bars, galleries, eateries and shops in the area.
I have been to New York a lot but not for about 12 years so I expect much will have changed.
Would appreciate some bohemian / leftfield / interesting recommendations as places to go.
Cheers

NYC, by eyectopus on Nov 26, 2008 11:22:36 GMT 1, I'm going this week. Going to head to the Deitch Projects to see the Keith Haring 10 Commandments and to the Joshua Liner Gallery to see the Chris Kuksi stuff. Alex Greys Gallery and Chapel is very good also. Going to miss the Anathema Exhibition on at Last Rites starting on the 13th Dec, it will have works by Shawn Barber & Vincent Castiglia.

NYC, by carbie on Nov 26, 2008 16:24:02 GMT 1, If you're feeling brave the Russian and Turkish baths on 10th street is an amazing throwback to he tennemant days of NYC. It's hot, gritty, and no frills. Plus you can drink giant beers while you're getting your schvitz on.

NYC, by pfffffffffft on Nov 26, 2008 16:36:40 GMT 1, Schillers on Rivington for Espresso Martini's and good food, PDT hidden away (literally) in the East Village for all other cocktail needs, Mangiami on Stanton for proper rustic Italian food and good friendly vibes, Remedy on East Houston for breakfast/brunch, Katz's again on East Houston for Pastrami on Rye, Jacques on Prince street for steak au poivre and decent draft Stella, Cafe Habana on Elizabeth for the sweetcorn, downstairs at La Esquina on Kenmare for the best Mexican food, Ray's on Prince for pizza, Freemans in Freeman alley for posh dinner, Beatrice for getting better acquainted with models, The Box for 'cabaret' performances, Mr West lounge bar in Chelsea for good music played through a decent sound system, and almost every bar in the Ludlow/Orchard Street area. And it's worth making a trip to Egg in Williamsburg for breakfast grits but expect to queue on weekends, write your name on the blackboard and go for a walk is my advice.
PDT can be a bit much sometimes, the hosts and bartenders are pretty hit and miss, show up on an off night and get a rude hostess or waitress and an inexperienced bartender. If you're going on a weekend it's wise to call ahead for reservations.
For hidden away joints try milk and honey and little branch. Pegu club also has some of THE best drinks in the city. If you want to go dive and hidden away there is always speakeasy lounge on avenue C, and you can smoke in there, the catch is talking your way in unless you're with someone they know or you have a card.
