FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by Gentle Mental on Nov 21, 2008 18:01:44 GMT 1, It's either we arm everyone with knowledge or disarm everyone with Fair Q... it's ridiculous that true fans who don't have the technical know how or the right software had to suffer 24 hours of sheer torture ending up with nothing whist flippers get 5 in less than an hour.
Should we just have a sticky that lists down everything we know on how to score a Banksy, so everyone can have a common pool of shared knowledge, hacks, backdoors etc... the links, instructions, risks, costs, pros and cons all there, use it, abuse it, don't use it whatever, at least we all get our fair shot, and we all take our risks.
I know we're not suppose to talk about it, but I think it's important that we do, because the touts are getting stronger and bigger with each release.... which might eventually monopolise the market, or force POW to sell Banksy prints at unflippable market prices.
What say you, Mr Silky?

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by theb on Nov 21, 2008 18:06:09 GMT 1, I completely agree with you. I know for many this collecting of art is more for the commerce than the art, but at the end of the day its the people who appreciate the art that loose out. I would love to see a way that the playing field was evened, and getting a print or piece was about luck, verses scripts/software, or the likes. I love the lottery idea.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by Gentle Mental on Nov 21, 2008 18:11:15 GMT 1, the lottery idea is great, but not many support it, for many selfish reason, (mainly i suspect, it's because it robs them off their edge) see Bongo's thread.
So i say go the other way, let everything be made known out in the open, for all to see. Show us the tools the touts and hackers are using.... let everyone from art nerd to street punk be armed to the teeth with bleeding edge "add to basket" technology!

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by Gentle Mental on Nov 21, 2008 18:20:06 GMT 1, congrats. Nola is one of his finest... even the edition number is perfect.
But how many fans scored? and how many touts with software edge scored? remember there were 25000 guests in this forum during the release... where did they come from? All we need are 200 of these with scripts and we're all screwed.
Relying on luck while they have the technology is just so unjust.

I doubt there were as many touts with a software edge that scored as there were straight up flippers that scored. Maybe I am just being naive but there were a lot of members of the board that did get one and didnt use scripts.
I think the bottom line is this was a very high demand release and beautiful print so ultimately some of us wont get one. I missed out on trollys and morons, happened to get this one.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by DYL4N on Nov 21, 2008 18:55:08 GMT 1, Dunno know about prewritten scripts for pow site would be that easy the way they allocate a random number to the print item, im no expert by any means but I have scored the last 3 banksys, with nothing but a fast and stable internet connection and consistent f5ing.
There is other well known sites where it is a doddle to score a print because the print names and numbers are so easy to predict/guess!

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by veralynn on Nov 21, 2008 19:26:21 GMT 1, Disagree, I wwas told of someone who knows someone who has 30 of his mates with the same script (I dont really know what this is) running so as soon as the Banksy page at POW changes they're in, like fucking guided missiles and 'first' in the queue.
So this loser and 30 of his pals bowl out with prints that they will, inevitably, flip - they source this forum and other for info, use and abuse.
Lottery systems would be OK in my opinion.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by veralynn on Nov 21, 2008 19:28:22 GMT 1, Or publicise that release date, available from source and those who are prepared to wait the longest get one? That actually seems fairer but I'm mindful that you wouldn't feel this way if you're old etc - registration and lottery systems? Why not? Blind auction? No.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by f5ers on Nov 21, 2008 19:32:47 GMT 1, Ive mentioned this already but.. How about a print for the fans.. only people who have posted over 100+ posts on the banksy forum are eligible and base the run size on who here wants one. Also each assigned print gets marked with the individuals forum username so we all know who has flipped their print.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by graeme501 on Nov 21, 2008 20:10:39 GMT 1, there is a simple way of solving this
POW release a 'shit in a box' on the banksy page, ยฃ1000, for chairty, no refunds, no exceptions, everyone who has a script running will automatically buy one of these, then i'd guess that would stop them for a while

Possibly due to me being across the pond but there is my "edge"

Having something to tell you when a page is updated is just as good as sitting and staring at the screen and hitting F5. I don't consider these update checkers to be unfair as you still have to be sitting at the computer to score. With a banksy release, by the time the program tells you they are available most of those people who are F5ing (like myself and my two friends who also scored) will have already hit add to cart and it will be sold out.
Now if you are saying that the "script" automatically hits add to cart for them, then yeah, that's a little unfair. But lots of people apparently also scored without any additional help.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by Tiki on Nov 21, 2008 20:36:03 GMT 1, Not looking to piss anyone off here but the fact of the matter seems to be that POW dont appear to give a shit where the prints end up, however much they apparently protest. Why would they care? There a business and why would they change anything, all flippers do is create a higher demmand for said print therefore benifiting POW when there next release comes around.
In fact it benifits all releases through them as amateur flippers start buying stuff that they cannot neccisarilly flip for a higher price. It still benifits POW though dosen't it? It started as a group of people that were in it for the art. Are they in it for that reason still or has it become just a happy bonus?
And before anyone mentions cans, is that not just good PR?
Flippers make money, real collectors make money, prats with to much money make money, pr stunts make money and the idea of something being extreamly hard to get hold of also makes money. Bounce all of those off one another, put your prices up and you end up with a hell of a recipe with the real collectors loosing out.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by stender on Nov 21, 2008 20:36:27 GMT 1, A script is no use in the case of yesterdays banksy release. Half the world were f5ing so your script wouldnt of been able to monitor the site anyway and you wouldn't of been able to buy one. You could switch graphics off etc to load quicker but still it wouldnt of helped much.
I think lottery is fairest or give some clues or tasks to find out how to get one imho

I'm not great defender of POW, but for fuck's sake... they've released a nice print in a small edition at a price far lower than they could have sold it for. I don't really see what they're supposed to do.... personally vet every single sale with a phone conversation testing the prospective buyer on their fandomness? You didn't get a print... neither did I... and i've been collecting Banksy work for a long time. It's just one of those things, get over it.

Whose complaining about it? Im just stating my opinions on the matter. Those oppinions happen to be that they are a business and arn't necisarilly that bothered about who ends up with what.
If you look back through my posts on the thread that announced the release you will see me saying that i have gone off banksy, that there are a lot of other prints i would rather have on my wall and that i wont be trying for one. So god knows where your getting the idea that im bitter or something?

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by bradpitt on Nov 21, 2008 21:31:13 GMT 1, The answer is there is no answer. How do you sell prints en mass to people and keep it fair? I think the way POW are selling is the fairest possible way available. We all have computers, knew when the release was coming and it was the luck of the draw. It seems a lot of people have got them on here who are genuine collectors, so thats a good thing.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by Standard on Nov 21, 2008 21:57:05 GMT 1, Wouldn't it be possible to stagger the sales of a print, although the scripts may pick this up too.
Or....have a pre-registration system. You sign up and pay a deposit. When a new release is issued they would contact you with the details, once it goes live you have a certain time to complete payment, otherwise you roll over and the print becomes available for surplus.
Or you pay a subscription to POW and are offered presales.
Proly lottery would be the fairest though, and if so I would like to see a small entry fee, then names pulled at random for a ticket to purchase, and the initial fees going to a Bansky charity. Surely this would be fair and reflect well for POW and Mr Banksy. It would give everyone a fair choice and although it won't stop the flippers it will at least water down their opportunities to make a quick ยฃ note or two.
To do nothing will only see more jumping on the band wagon and whilst a lot of fans may have managed to get a print, if this carries on then opportunities could well decrease.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by Heavyconsumer on Nov 22, 2008 1:05:49 GMT 1, You can get an addon for Firefox that reloads the page but if it reloads the basket or checkout pages, you could/would presumably lose the print??. There are also programs that monitor the page of choice and alert you when it changes (but trust me, you'll get sick of false alarms after a while, especially if you set up an obnoxious alert, as I did, just in case you're in the other room!), one I know of is called webmon, but I don't bother anymore. As for running script to put items in baskets, POW do allegedly refund orders + ban IPs where there is evidence of people trying to get multiples and the programs used for tickets are no good, as they put more than 1 item in the same basket, but I'm not convinced there's much software out there that works on their site. There are some techno-savvy people missing out on these releases (not refering to myself of course as I'm a technotard)! I don't think there's a lot else POW can do, except maybe think about increasing volume/edition-sizes, to make up for the insane increase in demand. I suspect many of these dodgy flipper types are among us here as it is. I also suspect many of them failed to get Nola, because Banksy's following is growing rapidly, as the site performance proved in reaction to the traffic hitting it yesterday.
Whatever system is used, we have to face facts - the odds of successfully getting a print at source are remote at best, especially if you're a long way from London or have a slower connection (I'm in Brazil with a 2Mb line and it was taking a full minute for any POW page to load - so zero chance of picking up a print). That's just life sometimes, no flippers and fairer release systems will make very little difference to your chances of scoring one of these in reality imo.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by arcam on Nov 22, 2008 2:05:46 GMT 1, Relying on luck while they have the technology is just so unjust. That's just a myth I don't believe such software exists. All you got is 1000's of people trying for a few hundred prints. The law of averages says most will miss out. The prints were gone in matters of seconds, the only refreshing done was in trying to not miss the drop. I am sorry you missed out but it happens to all of us. There is an open day for POW in a couple of weeks and I am sure there are going to be some cracking prints that will take everyones mind of it.

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by Guest on Nov 22, 2008 2:39:58 GMT 1, It really pisses me off to think that people are stealing prints using software, and them flipping them to true fans. Im not a big fan of fairq, because i love a good bunfight, but only if we are all on a level playing field. F5!

FORGET FAIR Q, SCRIPTS+SOFTWARE FOR ALL?, by telsin on Nov 22, 2008 2:39:57 GMT 1, I dont have a script, but I have a "web updater" but that thing works about half the time and when it does by the time i get to the site...prints are usually sold out anyways. Possibly due to me being across the pond but there is my "edge"
Hi Froz, I seem to be the most unluckist person in the world obtaining Banksy prints so i figure i need as much help as possible, would you be able to pm or post a link to your updater. many thanks

I agree Ronhill, but in reality the likes of you and me will always lose out to flippers unless we are on a level playing field as the flippers. Play them at there own game?

You could try Webmon, there's a download link here: www.markwell.btinternet.co.uk/webmon/
Like I say, you'll get a lot of false alerts whenever they touch anything on the page, but it does work. You can also set your own alert noises and stuff. Give it a go, but personally I don't think it will give anyone an edge. The problem is, as soon as an email starts to go out from POW there are thousands and thousands of people F5ing, the site slows down and your chance of being one of the 1st few hundred to basket a print is not great with all those F5ers out there. Better luck next time though.
