Most under-rated prints of 2008....???, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 27, 2008 20:12:10 GMT 1, Ross has started a cool "Print 2008" thread and I wanted to post this there, but I couldn't as there's been a special purchase (print-wise) for me this year, that I was obliged to post there. It would be nice if you would follow me in here by mentioning prints of this year that you feel haven't received the attention/recognition you feel they deserve. People have raved about Grafter's "Splash," "Prefab's "Enemy of Promise," Vihls' debut print and Hush's "Graf Geisha" among others, but what are they forgetting?
I recently got this piece home and I wanted to show a couple of detail shots, to give you an idea how detailed, colourful, subtle and lush this is and, why it's so under-rated imho. It is a giclee which I know turns a lot of you off immediately, but I agree that some images just cannot be screen printed to good enough effect and this is probably one of them. I give you Choe's "Silent Dance." Can't believe they're still available! At least I think they are.
What are you're votes for either most under-rated or maybe even best image currently available if you prefer.

Couldn't agree more. "The Carnival goes on" definitely gets my vote for under-rated print of the year.
Gorgeously printed on thick paper it felt more like an original than a print, and smelt amazing!

Most under-rated prints of 2008....???, by Daniel Silk on Oct 27, 2008 21:23:27 GMT 1, The Insect prints up on Laz now look quality to me Gotta be in the top ten prints for this year Plus a good number of the releases by Rourke. When you get to see the quality of them close up they are pretty hard to top. All of Josh Keyes work is brilliant ;D They gotta be rated high. Mear One has some amazing skills, and must make a big break onto the scene at some point.
Im sure I have missed some more that deserve a mention Its been a great year so far, and I suspect we might have the best to come in the run up to Christmas ;D

Most under-rated prints of 2008....???, by weaver on Oct 27, 2008 22:00:53 GMT 1, I feel the Conor Harrington prints were under rated earlier this year too. Couldn't agree more. "The Carnival goes on" definitely gets my vote for under-rated print of the year. Gorgeously printed on thick paper it felt more like an original than a print, and smelt amazing! A heavy beast an all, still not hung mine. Alsbabar's was the only one I saw framed ( yet). It was going to go over the bed, but the wife put the brakes on in favour of citygirl, which is ok in my book.
Still some of the original run available, and at ยฃ300 an absolute steal. Shocked these are still available considering some of the stuff that sells out.

Not really that shocked. These prints look a little flat in comparrison to the real thing. I know that it's difficult to afford the real deal and therefore prints are a great compensation, however I think that these prints leave something to be desired in their attempt to convey Conor's vibrant use of colour and texture in his art.

Then again at ยฃ300 for an edition of 100 and the quality of the print??? guess its each to their own, the 2 main prints that I have previously heard peole describe as being flat and not a good representation of the original are 21st century love by micallef and Choe's city girl ( 150 edition), but having seen neither original in the flesh, and owning one of the hand finnished connor's I'm probably not in a position to comment. The original set that the connor print came from was predominantly muted tones of greys and B&W, but it does lack the colour / vibrancy of some of his other work, which I think very much suits the subject.

Most under-rated prints of 2008....???, by baznyc on Oct 27, 2008 23:02:11 GMT 1, I take your point that this print is not intended to convey the colour that he is noted for, however, this is the reason that I believe that they've yet to sell out.

Could be, as its alot more quiet than his other work, I think there has been alot less hype and furore arround connors work which has also kept alot of the buy-to-sell punters away. No bad thing if it help keep the prices down and his work getting into the right hands.

of course they're flat, they're giclee prints
try finding detail on the original that hasn't been included in the print

Most under-rated prints of 2008....???, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 28, 2008 0:46:40 GMT 1, I'm with you one that on HC, love mine. Have you spotted the face on one of the trees?
If I were in the UK, I'd be having MFM make me up one of these framejobs - gorgeous! But I think something more simple is in order over here, with the lack of a real framing superstar on my radar so far! I also need it to match in style with a frame for Hoppers, so probably just a natural wood tray style frame. But I love seeing yours. I'll let you see mine in a few weeks hopefully.
I was very impressed when I first saw this. Looks great and didn't get a mention on the main board at all, although I remember seeing it in the ยฃ50 thread.
I think Silky's def' onto something with the Mear One shout too. The guy is brilliant and puts so much work into his releases, yet doesn't get too much of a mention on our main board here! Love the way the gallery (Baurmann I think it is) post the wicked process pics too.

Most under-rated prints of 2008....???, by redman on Oct 28, 2008 10:57:31 GMT 1, Great thread.
Prefabs phone box for me. I think they where ยฃ65. An absolute bargain.
The explosion of a British icon. Makes me angry and sad every time I look at it. Reminds me of listening to early Jam albums, 'In the city' etc...
A reflection of how many people feel. And the point at which our pressure cooker country can take no more.
All in a single image.
Hand finished as well.
Very nice indeed.
