Essentially it requires no effort on behalf of the artist, aside from their original drawing. The rest is all photoshop and digital printers. It's fine if you wand a print that looks like a painting or a watercolour, but the point for many of prints and printmaking is that it's a technical craft and the final object is not only a skillful art work, but also a skillfully created work of art. For me nothing beats etchings and engravings, the most labour intensive and frankly nicest looking type of prints, they are relief prints so they have depth and texture. It's a shame no Urban artist's have ever really worked with the medium, save the odd work here or there. Silkscreening is an interesting technique but it's boring and so repetitive now, anyone and his aunt can make a half decent screenprint with a little practice. I should know I've basically no artistic ability what-so-ever and after 3 sessions in the print studio I was turning out pretty decent CMYK 4 colour screen prints.

These guys mentioned by Arcam have put out some of the best quality and best looking prints out of everyone mentioned in these forums imho!
I think it's a real shame that people have this immediate, negative raction to giclees. At the end of the day, I only buy prints because I really like an image and the original is 9.9 times out of 10, way out of my reach! The fact is that while somecan, many original works of art, simply cannot be reproduced accurately with the screen-printing medium. I have also read that a lot more goes into getting a giclee right and ensuring the proper colouring, than simply adjusting the "printer settings." I'm not a prin-maker or artist, but some of the nicest pieces I've bought are giclees, so clearly I'm a punter where some others aren't.

What are your thoughts on giclee?, by They call me Stephen on Nov 1, 2008 16:42:03 GMT 1, i see no problem with giclee, infact some of my favourite prints are printed with the method; micallef's 21cl & dd along with choe as mentioned. i'm not sure if any of those could be acheived via screenprinting due to the numebr of colours and minute details involved.

Only thing that sucks is when an incredibly simple one/two-color image is done as a giclee rather than a screenprint, that just comes across as a bit lazy.

It's pronounced "zhee-clay" ...and I'm not buying anything that is pronounced "zhee-clay!"

Wikipedia can be confusing at times. I'd say that if you want to advise on the Giclee's pronounciation you should drop the h from Zhee. Zee clay would be more appropriate.

The amount of people that think Gicleรฉ's are a cop-out way of printing art or are worthless because there is no contact with the artists is silly.
In essence it is computer printed image on paper and people don't realise what goes into colour matching to the original etc.
It's nice to hear that the screenprinting does cost less. Anyone can screen print if they practice a bit and Gicleรฉ will always win when having to reproduce full colour peices with high detail.

I asked as I posted an image i did in the artists section called credit crunch and managed to delete my layers leaving me with a flat file. Not really wanting to seperate 6 or 7 layers giclee was all I felt i was left with, but a few said it's a copout.
I wouldn't say giclee is cheap though! Have you seen the price of ink!
Anyone got a epson 1000 for sale or swap?

Definitely! There's no way Silent Dance could have been screen-printed! And I prefer it to ALL the screen-prints I've seen so far this year. It's all about the image and the end result! It's easy to turn one's nose up at the media, but if it works it works and it can look great. What else matters! Hand finished screenprints can look crap, as can originals. The media used are simply tools to produce the best possible end product!

i use archive quality inks, archive paper and canvas which should have similar longevity to archive quality screen prints.
the detail and colour range of these high end ink jet printers is excellent for multi colour prints that are not possible to be prouced by screen printing methods. this has given artists another tool to produce consistent high quality works, and you'll find that many artists use a mixture of ink jet printing, screen printing, and painting to produce new pieces.
ps laz gallery - i was very dissapointed with the micallef prints produced last year for the LA show. it's a shame that they looked so dull compared to the originals.

I'll take an etching, woodcut, potato print, stone litho, artist litho, letterpress, silver, gum bichromate, cyanotype, serigraph over a giclee any day.

I don't get your point really Snausages, but would like to understand. I mean if there's an original painting you like, which is reproduced as an edition, are you saying you would not buy it, purely because it's a giclee, even if that were the best way to do justice to the original image? If so, fair enough of course, perhaps you mean that you wouldn't buy a print, just because of the image alone?
Personally, I think that if I like an image enough, how it's put on paper/canvass is unimportant, but to each his own.

and what do you call a mass produced screen print that hasn't been handled or signed by the artist?
