Any tips on photographic lighting?, by spirit on Sept 22, 2008 14:44:14 GMT 1, Off topic I know but...
I want to photograph examples of my printed graphic design work for my website. Mostly brochures, catalogues, annual reports etc etc
I have blagged a reasonable camera off my sister (Canon EOS 40D), a good tripod and I have a big piece of white table top for the background.
I will be shooting indoors. What I would like is some tips for the lighting. I want reasonably professional results while doing it as cost effectively as possible. (a typical Rolls Royce taste/Bicycle money scenario!)
What kind of lighting would you suggest? and where could I get it? (links please). Better to buy it or hire it do you think?
Also any general tips on camera settings for this kind of job would be appreciated.
cheers

Any tips on photographic lighting?, by spirit on Sept 22, 2008 15:02:10 GMT 1, What's a light cube Mike - is that the same thing as a light tent?
I've had a look at those and they seem great for shooting 3d objects, but I will mainly be photographing flat items from directly above - so I'm not sure if thats the way to go or not

Same thing indeed. If you get a small one you can have the opening at the top and photograph directly downwards onto a flat image.

Any tips on photographic lighting?, by m on Sept 22, 2008 15:09:52 GMT 1, What size are the things you want to photograph,a scanner could be a better bet but they would need to be around A4 in size. You could get continuous lights, they can cost a fair bit though.Or do what i have in the past and use daylight in the back garden.

Any tips on photographic lighting?, by spirit on Sept 22, 2008 15:28:24 GMT 1, Cheers Mike - I will investigate
Thanks for the links to that forum cg, some great stuff there, very Blue Peter! (in a good way)
M - size will be up to 50 x 30cm - scanner not really an option as I want to get the sides of some of the thicker items in. I have considered the daylight option but I want a bit more control over when I can shoot!

DO I need to buy a separate boom tripod (for the overhead shots) or can I convert my existing tripod in to a boom one using a "widget"?

Any tips on photographic lighting?, by m on Sept 22, 2008 21:23:11 GMT 1, Hi, I like the look of these first,Cheap: 2 x www.backdropsource.co.uk/Producti....-with-umbrellas The reason, the stands are bigger and give you more flexibility. You dont need soft boxes as you are already using one in the form of your light tent.Converting your own tripod would be cheapest,Manfrotto do a lovely tripod that would do the trick but it works out at around ยฃ100.Hope this helps.

Any tips on photographic lighting?, by spirit on Sept 23, 2008 11:44:00 GMT 1, Hi M
Thanks again for the great advice. I managed to find a horizontal arm that attaches to a regular tripod on ebay for about ยฃ25 (and another ยฃ20 to ship it from the US unfortunately...) but still the cheapest option I could find.
