Those leeches at Vermin sure work fast...., by Heavyconsumer on Sept 21, 2008 17:42:31 GMT 1, complete pi55take imo. The only thing L+T gain is the sales revenues, but they lose a whole lot more in terms of credability imo. Getting unauthorized authentication of work, against the artist's will, cannot be a credible act. It's entirely meaningless and I hope that no buyer sees the authentication as holding any form of value at all, as it clearly doesn't.

Those leeches at Vermin sure work fast...., by snausages on Sept 21, 2008 18:40:22 GMT 1, Pest Control do something? So let's see Banksy illegally sprays images on private property, owners of this private property (and sometimes thieves) remove the artwork and sell it. So Banksy thinks he has control over what people do 'after' he conducts his illegal activity on someone elses property? He should simply be thankful that's he's not being called up on criminal charges imo.
It's a free market and if Banksy won't authenticate them there are plenty of other people who (at least claim) to have formidable knowledge of his work and can do a reasonable job authenticating it.
There is nothing Banksy can do to stop 'Vermin' in a free country anyway. The UK is free right? Vermin if deemed competent by the art buying public will continue to do their business just like how any other business works in the free world. If the public doesn't trust them or question the validity of their work then their business will go down the toilet just like any other business. Simple as that.
There are hundreds of art experts around the world who provide authentication services for practically any piece of art and a number of 'experts' exist about most important artists. This is not much different.

Those leeches at Vermin sure work fast...., by aginghippie on Sept 21, 2008 19:15:32 GMT 1, But there are hundreds of art experts around the world who provide authentication services for practically any piece of art and lots of 'experts' about most important artists. This is not much different. This is true. You can find someone to authenticate anything if you look long enough. Of course the authentication isn't worth the paper it's written on when you come to try and sell the work. That is the problem for any one silly enough to buy on the strength of a Vermin authentication.
If people will buy unsigned prints thinking they are signed than they will buy on the strength of a Vermin certificate. When the market matures in a couple of years and they try to sell the work they are in for an expensive shock. Anyone who doubts this ought to compare the value of a board authenticated Warhol with one that isn't.

Those leeches at Vermin sure work fast...., by graeme501 on Sept 21, 2008 19:20:44 GMT 1, the worrying thing would be the people that own vermin buying their own lots at high prices to give their COA credability at future auctions, one things for sure - they wont allow these lots to go unsold

providing they have enough money to do so, 50 -150k is quite a lot to build up your own credibility especially if you claim not to charge anything for your service!
saturday should be interesting anyhow, few really nice piece of furniture for sale for anyone who hasn't seen the catalogue

Of course the authentication isn't worth the paper it's written on when you come to try and sell the work. Sarcasm aside there are bona fide experts on many artists whose authentication work is taken very seriously and sure not everyone always agrees. Just ask the woman who believes she has a multimillion dollar Pollock that some expert won't agree upon yet some scientific evidence supports. But this just means the buyers determine the authenticators credibility when it comes up for auction.
If Vermin are authenticating questionable or faked works they are leaving themselves open to very expensive lawsuits. Something most people wouldn't do. But sure, who knows...

I'd agree that verification from Pest Control should add more value than Vermin the difference in this example is that there are no works by Andy Warhol that his board will refuse to even attempt to authenticate. If there were I'm sure that we'd have a small industry built up around verifying those warhols.

Those leeches at Vermin sure work fast...., by mcster on Sept 22, 2008 8:23:19 GMT 1, If someone is dumb enough to buy a vermin 'authenticated' piece without doing their own reasearch then let them waste as much money as they want to. Vermin's opinion on whether a Banksy is real means as much as Wayne Rooney's to me.

Those leeches at Vermin sure work fast...., by Guest on Sept 22, 2008 11:36:11 GMT 1, ok, what hppens if you have an original piece (not a street piece) by Banksy, fill in the PC autorisation form then you get a reply from them saying that although they admit that the piece is authentic they wont issue a COA as it is not a piece that they want in circulation but offer to relieve you of it ??This is often happening!
never heard of this before
