What shall I do with a month off work???, by stillborncrisps on Aug 26, 2008 20:28:53 GMT 1, I've got a real good opportunity - hope everyone can help me think what to do with it!
My work have said they will let me take a full month off (with pay ) to do some sort of Charity / Non Profit work - can be anywhere in the world, doing anything.
Been racking my brains and I think it'd be cool to do something Art based, but haven't thought much beyond that, and am looking for ideas/suggestions.
Does anyone know of any Art Charities, Foundations or Non Profit type organisations that'd let me do voluntary work, or a short placement? Doesn't have to be a full month, eg. I could do 2 fortnights in 2 totally different places.
I am rubbish at painting myself, but have a good understanding/appreciation of Art in all forms. I can teach, I'm not bad at organising and helping, and I'm good at design though would rather not be sitting at a PC all day.
The coolest would be to go somewhere cool like NY or San Fran, or Australia, Brazil, Mexico... but am open to anything as long as it's not too cold.
It'd be great to go and help set up something like last year's Ghetto, but I somehow think whatever they do this year it'd be a bit of a closed shop given all the secrecy that surrounds such POW events.
Anyone got any ideas / contacts in their part of the world ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

What shall I do with a month off work???, by Heavyconsumer on Aug 26, 2008 22:22:35 GMT 1, JA, there are LOADS of great causes in Brazil, mostly to be found in Rio and Sao Paulo of course. Personally I have only attempted contact with a couple of them, asking what if anything I can do to help in my spare time, sadly I've not yet received any replies and would not know who to recommend. The main problem here would filtering through and trying to find people that do, rather than those who just take money and talk. There was a worthy-looking cause that I tried to persue a while back, someone I came across while looking at C215's Brazil work on Flickr (in the comments for the photos). I think the name of the organisation was "Beija flor" (humming-bird), helping street kids. There must be loads but I haven't the time to help out now, as I'll be coming to London later in the week and got some work to get through. However, if I do find/hear of anything that looks especially cool, I'll post.
edit - asked my wife which charities we support and they're pretty local and specific (oncolgy hospital for children in our city and local churches or hard-up families we know).
There is a lot of distrust here in general when giving money to ANYONE. Everything is so damned corrupt! We are having local elections right now and people are generally agreed in our circle that the best bet for a local MP, is a guy who has previously been convicted of fraud, but even though he's known to steal, at least he has done some good in his previous terms, while the others may/will steal and might not do anything positive for the city! Funny but very sad.

What shall I do with a month off work???, by veralynn on Aug 27, 2008 19:59:52 GMT 1, I'm not sure how hard it would be but why not try and hook up with one of the larger charities and see if you can volunteer to do a month for them? I know of a local charity that raises money for Ugandan orphans and some of the principals of that charity went to help in Kampala but were so moved by what they saw they stayed.
It's a unique opportunity that you have.......best of luck with whatever you choose...
