What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by Harveyn on Aug 7, 2008 9:40:31 GMT 1, Don't know how everybody else feels out there but when I buy art I buy it to hang on my walls.
The problem I have is my tastes are continuously evolving and my passion and thirst remains unsatisfied. The problem is that there are only so many walls in my house and as the years have gone on the decision process to buy or not to buy based on which piece of art I might have to let go has become more difficult (extremely difficult).
I would also add that the following system has helped me become less impulsive when buying.
My stupid system.........
I have 32 pieces of art hanging and I have my top 12. Within the top twelve I have my "Magnificent 7". If I am selling or trading any piece from within the top 12 it has to be able to replace a piece from the "Magnificent 7".
So for instance my recent Choe original purchase was only going to make it to number 8 and therefore I could not sell or trade any of my top 12 to help get it. Hence the cash deal or no deal.
Stupid system I know but it does help with decisions.
How does everyone else manage the decision process?

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by dslug on Aug 7, 2008 9:58:42 GMT 1, Im very surprised Blek is in there based on the photos Ive seen you post of your various bits and pieces.I like that image by Blek but in general I find his work a bit boring.
I know what you mean about the changing taste thing though,I buy loads of furniture,a few bits every week and more often than not the best part of the process is buying it.I get over the whole thing very quickly and at the end of each year when I look back on how my taste has changed there were items I bought that I would now not even consider buying. The good thing about the whole process though is that your taste does get more refined.

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by Deleted on Aug 7, 2008 10:00:36 GMT 1, I try to have a system by having different saving funds going for different pieces of Art as well as for other more mundane things like food etc., but it never really works because just as one fund is almost complete i have to raid it to top up another because something has become available, i suppose it works in a way. I just plonk the pieces on the wall wherever there is space and it looks fine, some pieces are just leaning against the walls where theres a fight for space, contemporary mixed with trad., walls crammed floors empty!. I love that Sid and Nancy! oh and that Kant Complains not bad either.

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by DYL4N on Aug 7, 2008 10:02:26 GMT 1, I suggest storage for most of your pieces Neil ;D
So happens i know a place close to you in a place called Greenisland ;D don't know if you have heard of it? But it has loads of wall space for storing unwanted art ;D
Brilliant collection mate! I suggest whatever you do keep it well above young child and baby height!! D
P.S. Great wheather at the mo, but then you would probably rather stay in and look at your walls I know I would. ;D

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by Harveyn on Aug 7, 2008 10:08:27 GMT 1, Dslug I have the exact same problem with chairs and lights. My house is coming down with them. I suppose I could start setting my art on chairs in corners illuminated by my lights. I do have a problem..... ;D ;D
On the Blek its in there because I love it. I have EINE, Neate, Herakut, Case, Kinsey, Brookes, Small, Choe and many more originals. For quite a few I like these artists more than Blek but this piece just does it for me. My top seven are not based on value either as I have more valuable pieces outside my top 7.

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by daz205 on Aug 7, 2008 10:48:51 GMT 1, i work on the principal of no more than 2 pieces hanging from the same artist ( originals if possible ) if i purchase something new either i have to get creative and find more space to hang it or sell another piece, if the piece purchased is the 3rd item from an artist then one of their other pieces must be sold, seems to work but i`ve found my tastes evolving into more expensive/rarer pieces as i`ve been trading up i guess

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by mcnuts on Aug 7, 2008 10:56:31 GMT 1, sorry.... not to sound like a dick as i really dont mean to, but what's the point of this thread, really? I've seen the pictures millions of times and it really just seems like a chance to show off. I like the faile, itโs fantastic, but do we really need another thread? Just thinking out loud here.

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by Harveyn on Aug 7, 2008 11:07:36 GMT 1, Offending pictures removed so hopefully that will not distract from the topic which I thought was interesting. Just wanted to understand how peoples collections have grown, how tastes have evolved and how decisions are made when something has to go.

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by Harveyn on Aug 7, 2008 11:14:03 GMT 1, I would also say that its not one of the best threads ever started thats for sure. Sometimes its best not to think out loud...
Hopefully it will drop of the radar soon.

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by curiousgeorge on Aug 7, 2008 11:15:42 GMT 1, Same boat here, while in a stupid buying frenzy, i gave little thought to hanging space.Suffice to say it's come back to bite me on the ass. Presently finding homes with trusted friends for many pieces, while i like owning lots of art, it does break my heart to see them in 'storage' as this defeats the whole point of art, IE to be viewed/looked at
Don't have bottomless pockets so I'm at the stage now if i want something else, then i have to sell something, how i will go about choosing what to keep and what to sell?? Have not got a clue, need to find a system that works for me, going to be hard as i genuinely love every piece i have bought

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by mcnuts on Aug 7, 2008 11:39:57 GMT 1, ahh the pictures arent offending... just let me know when you are on vacation, your address and if you have a dog or not and I can help remove some of the pictures. Or, I may just Edukators style break in, move your art around and leave.

the point is, how do people manage their art on limited funds & wall space. talk about shitting on a thread. i hadn't seen the pictures before & i'm sure many others haven't either. next time, keep your thoughts to yourself?

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by dslug on Aug 7, 2008 12:49:45 GMT 1, I think the real point here and with collecting in general is the evolving taste aspect, what you buy early on might be valuable but you might not like it as much as you did before you bought it.

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by doublehelix on Aug 7, 2008 14:09:48 GMT 1, I would have liked to have seen the photos! I've just moved so still have the luxury of some wall space to fill, it's fun looking for the right pieces.

What Happens When Your Collection Gets To Big, by nacional on Aug 7, 2008 15:44:32 GMT 1, Arrived a bit late to this thread and was actually looking for ward to seeing the pics. Damn you Mcnuts!!!
Very anal of you Harveyn, but admirable in its anality.
I rotate on a random basis when I get bored of something. This has into the mix the taste of my missus who will take down pictues i have put up and replace them with her tastes.
Have about 40 or 50 that go around and around......have tried to sell but never managed to do so, so end up swapping. For example swapped Neate prints direct with some artists for some original canvases....niiiice......
