Tipping Point?, by romanywg on Jul 17, 2008 12:02:12 GMT 1, What a depressing thread. Can I just add that we're all going to die as well. On the plus side Romanywg has cemented his place in history as king of the geeks! There's a guy downstairs from me who has an even bigger collection - of wine bottles - which he proudly displays in his front window (all empty of course).
Wine bottles. That's nothing, do want to see my collection of miniatures? I jest.

Tipping Point?, by sham69 on Jul 17, 2008 13:51:28 GMT 1, Where's the doom and gloom coming from?
Put simply, like all things new and shiny this 'street art thing' is rapidly being overrun by the art equivalent of Yellow Dog and Plastic Bertrand. I can imagine Banksy laying away at night wondering if he's spawned a monster. Let's see how many active members this forum has in 2-3 years time that can be chewed with it. Itll be interesting to see who's still producing these derivative variations on a theme and more importantly who still gives a f**k about commenting on it.
It's starting to feel like the Pistols' 'flogging a dead horse'.
someone please give me something to get excited about . . .

F*ck me what a misreable bunch. Art like any creative medium goes through any stages, and when a certain style becomes bloated / overblown it generates new and more interesting strains. Look at cities and how they evolve over time. Art ebbs and flows, and this will happen. As a collective of fans we have been royally spoilt in the last year with an amazing explosion of street artists. You are bound to then get a lot of second rate people jumping on board, some as it's the new cool thing to do, some to make a quick buck, and some as they are inspired (but limited in talent). As for no hope I've got one word:
VHILS - more or less unheard of pre Cans, 21 and clearly the winner from Cans

Thats your personal opinion on the art, it dunt mean things have reached some sort of point it just says you don't like most of the art in this scene at the moment. It like me going on a Ferrari forum and saying they have only made one good car, and that was back in the 60's, and the stuff being made now is crap! so the company is boomed ;D

Tipping Point?, by sham69 on Jul 17, 2008 15:04:19 GMT 1, Silky It's not a personal opinion - it's a scientific fact. Management consultants Kinsesys have just done a study on the qualitative output of a random element of street artists flogging stuff around here. Their output has been measured using the McDougal-Taggart benchmark and it's been found that 99% of it is actually shite.

Tipping Point?, by daley on Jul 17, 2008 15:33:18 GMT 1, I'm looking forward to the second wave. Bring it on! What's miserable about that? Following on with the punk comparisons - If you take band t-shirts for example, well bands that have been together longer than 5 years, then you'll probably see more Ramones t-shirts than any other in the world. Real anger, passion and energy never dies whatever format it comes in.

Clearly Banksy must be the Pistols. But who are the others?
Pure Evil as the Exploited? Neate as Magazine? Micallef as Billy Idol (post Gen X!!!) So who is Discharge and who is Aunty Pus (remember him???)
And who the fuck is the artistic equivalent of Gary Bloody Bushel???

Tipping Point?, by mcster on Jul 17, 2008 18:06:51 GMT 1, Like Punk it's here to stay, it'll just drop off of the radar with some people. The problem at the moment is too many people copying too few styles. The truely creative people will go on to develop futher and the others will be 3 for a tenner at HMV. I reckon PIL were a better band than the Pistols (although not as important I grant you), so all is not lost when the initial craze dies out. ...Yes some of the current stuff is rubbish and won't stand the test of time, but that may also mean people start letting good stuff go at a reasonable price. I reckon real collectors should hope for the crash, there will be some bargains to have in the short term.

Ummmm... I'd have to say probably not...
The Rolling Stones perhaps? The Who?

That's what I was going to say, not the first to have said it though nice compliment. I actually took some photos of Don Letts around 1975. He used to work in Acme Attractions on the Kings Road in the basement of Antiquarius which is where we used to buy our zoots from. He had very short dreads but I had never seen them before so I asked if he didn't mind being photographed.
