Or (and this must be the case for Laz's ยฃ2k My Confession) you don't know your arse from your elbow.

Why buy form a gallery?, by a4mnt on Jul 10, 2008 18:43:22 GMT 1, security, peace of mind and you have recourse if something goes wrong
The original question is a bit ambiguous. Buy it from where online? Another gallery? Ebay? The artist?
Depending on from where online its being bought, it then puts Alsabar's answer into context. Security......security of what? Peace of mind......of what, the fact that you are being ripped off in some cases. And a recourse....well, once again, depends on where you buy from online.
Online galleries can offer just as much as a gallery with a public space. Frankie's Campbarbossa being an ideal example. And in light of recemt events with TLSG, clearly galleries aren't bulletproof.
If you are going to make a purchase from a gallery, its always good to know how much the artists work goes for from other galleries (if they are not tied into an exclusive deal) or even better, from them direct. I recently saw a piece online from an American gallery. I contacted the artist direct and asked if they would sell me the piece. They suggested that if it was still available at the end of the show, we could talk business. The day after the show finished, I emailed the artist and got a $1000 original knocked down to less than half of that, including shipping to UK.
Its always worth asking for a discount, whether its from the gallery or the artist. Times are tight and a sale is better than no sale at all.
PS - Rob, if you can buy for 1/3 of the gallery price, i know where i'd be shopping. Just make sure there is insurance on the shipping.
