What do people say, by Wiseblood on Jul 11, 2008 12:47:19 GMT 1, when they see your collection?
Im having a bit of work done on my house and every tradesman that walks in says "oh i see you paint." That either means they think i have great talent or that my collection is crap.
My friends and family all say, why so many posters, when i explain what they are, they then spend the rest of the night saying, you really paid X amount for a piece of paper, or but its just a piece of concrete with Vandals written on it, i could do it.
I need new friends.

What do people say, by mcster on Jul 11, 2008 13:10:17 GMT 1, My parents are polite, but I can see that they can't fathom my taste. It's something I'm grateful for given their taste in decor......most visitors pass comment in one way of the other, with those that don't know always assuming the larger the piece the greater the value. The most popular pieces with people that don't collect (and therefore free of any bias based on value) seem to be Flags (Silver), my Arofish 'Angel' and Dolk's 'Big Che'. I used to have some Cauty prints that were generally the least favourite with people.

What do people say, by retroboy on Jul 11, 2008 13:20:03 GMT 1, I agree,
Most of my friends 'don't get it' but then the cr*p they've got on their walls explains quite a lot - ikea 'prints' and the like. Although they also think everything is a 'banksy' too as they don't have any great knowledge of experience of the 'scene'. I don't mind, I love what's on my walls in my flat and that's all that really matters

What do people say, by mcster on Jul 11, 2008 14:09:19 GMT 1, I wonder if as time goes on people will give up buying those IKEA prints and start collecting soemthing with a little more substance to it? Most of my mates care about their clothes, music, furniture, etc enough to try and find stuff that's original and new, yet hardly any have bought into art of any kind. Saying that, the same people have a lot more Holidays than I do !

What do people say, by doughy on Jul 11, 2008 14:24:52 GMT 1, Good post.
I have fairly open minded relatives and friends, so some people, especially my generation or younger do appreciate it, but aren't like minded. Most people I speak to know of Banksy, due to the media, but aren't that interested. Plus it would be boring if everyone was into the forum, "scene" and the same kind of art.

What do people say, by jonpud on Jul 11, 2008 14:26:48 GMT 1, My parents just thought typical Jon! When I got divorced and eventually got my new place I decorated it the way I wanted it and for the first time in my life I have a place that is TOTALLY mine!
They don't like Jamie Reid's 'God Saves' images everywhere which I can understand due to Myra Hindley and the Cambridge Rapist being depicted along with slogans like 'Fuck Forever'etc.
Having said all that, because of my art my mother now proudly sports a Banksy on her wall 'Girl With Balloon' and one of Jef aerosols 'Sitting Boy' images, my father has a couple of Nick Walkers and a Blek Le Rat. If they hadn't taken an interest in my art then they would never have bought these pieces, my mother is after Micallef's JD now!!!

Love this story, for me it's the other way round, my interest in art has all come about as a direct result of my mum doing an OU degree in the History of Art & Lit in the 80's and taking me with her to galleries on a regular basis. Whlist she is interested in the Banksy, Faile et al I show her (I tried sending her to the recent Neate exhibition but she get held up and couldn't make it) she always comes back at me with the "yes it's all very nice dear but give me a David Hockney any day! Can't knock her taste for that though

What do people say, by mcster on Jul 11, 2008 15:07:05 GMT 1, vast majority of urban art sucks, even some of the stuff by the "big names" looks juvenile and amateurish. unfortunately our eyes have adjusted to it.
Without doubt there is some rubbish out there, but most of it is still more interesting than those terrible mass produced prints of flowers and rocks that IKEA and their ilk sell. I don't mind so much if things are being amateurish and juvenile if they are interesting and original. An artist can always develop. IMO the real problem comes with a lot of stuff that just seems like a waste of paint to me, bad copies of other, better, work. I was looking on 'the bay' earlier and there are a lot of two-bob artists popping up now. Maybe we should put them in contact with IKEA and kills two birds with one stone...

What do people say, by a4mnt on Jul 11, 2008 18:30:29 GMT 1, I get other forum members so drunk they miss the last train home and have to sleep on my sofa. Then i announce loudly at 3am what everything is (even though they know and probably own all the same pieces) and that tends to really piss my house mates off, strangely enough.
I've got fed up with hoping people might like the collection. Then once in a while a friend of a friend will come round and absolutely love everything, which is nice.

Nothing wrong with Ikea. I have an Ikea Keith Haring above a radiator and don't have to worry about it at all.
