"ARTC*NT" The Mercy Centre Foundation Appeal, by Harveyn on Jul 2, 2008 20:58:09 GMT 1, Okay folks here is the deal.
As I am sure you are all aware by now it appears that some money that was owed to โThe Mercy Centre Foundationโ does not look like its going to make it there.
A significant number of members contacted me with regards to setting up some sort of appeal to raise some funds for this fantastic cause.
Ged (Paper Windows) an artist on the forum came up with an idea that I think would be a great way to raise some serious cash for this appeal and through the early hours last night and this morning we have develop this concept into the following format.
Before I get started I would also like to thank Chris (Beejoir) for his words that have proved to be the inspiration and catalyst for this appeal (www.artc**t.com).
Ged (Paper Windows) will supply 4 x A2 art pads on which he will stencil on the front cover to include the name of this appeal and the charity that will benefit.
Now to the tricky bit.
I will be approaching artists to produce one or two pieces to help raise funds for this appeal. We are looking to get 24 artists names and hopefully some of the big names from the Street Art seen will agree to get involved. I will be contacting artists, galleries and forum members I have dealt with over the years to enlist their help.
The appeal will run for 9 weeks. The first 2 weeks will be to co-ordinate the list of artists and produce 4 groups of 6 artists. The next 6 weeks will involve Ged sending the 4 A2 pads to the first 4 artists listed. Each artist will then be given 1 week to produce one or two pieces which will remain in the art pad. They will then be instructed by myself whom to pass the art pad onto next. This process will be repeated until all 24 artists have completed one or two pieces each and we have 4 art pads of with between 6 and 12 pieces of art in each.
The last week will be used to sell or auction (details to follow) the 4 art pads as a set of works (i.e. 4 auctions).
To maintain and stimulate peopleโs interest during the course of the first 8 weeks I will get each artist to send me images of piece(s) as they complete them and I will post them on the forum.

"ARTC*NT" The Mercy Centre Foundation Appeal, by Heavyconsumer on Jul 2, 2008 21:02:07 GMT 1, Great idea Ged and Neil. This sounds like a really exciting project and end product for auction.
Have you decied yet if there will be one auction with the highest bidders choosing their pad or 4 seperate auctions with disclosure of each pad's contents?

"ARTC*NT" The Mercy Centre Foundation Appeal, by Heavyconsumer on Jul 2, 2008 21:23:29 GMT 1, One possible downside to this project could be that there are many of us here who'd love to contribute art or money to the cause and will be unable to make realistic offers for the pads. Might there be someone to whom we can send more modest donations of money and art to be sold off for the same cause?

"ARTC*NT" The Mercy Centre Foundation Appeal, by Harveyn on Jul 2, 2008 21:28:23 GMT 1, HC - I did think of that but I am sure people can still sell some pieces and donate directly. Also we might run a raffle system allowing everyone to donate.

"ARTC*NT" The Mercy Centre Foundation Appeal, by curiousgeorge on Jul 2, 2008 21:29:14 GMT 1, Not wanting to piss on anyone's parade but what is wrong with just clicking the donate button??
This all seems a bit contrived, this issue really has been jumped on,probably get hammered for saying it, but this does not seem like a selfless act to me, especially when given the history and drama of the last charity event here. If people are prepared to put hours and hours in then fair play to them and good luck, it would be something i would do (for something close to me)
What will happen is loads of people will be whipped into a frenzy of hype over Artists involved, and for me this is not what charity is about. It's only when an Artist posts a well deserved rant do people feel 'charitable' wtf is that about?
Anyway i thought it, i typed it, i posted it
IMO If it bothers you so much that kids go without, the donate link is below
www.mercycentre.org/En/donation_shelter_orphan_donation_charity_NG0_help_support_slum_charities_thailand_bangkok.aspx

"ARTC*NT" The Mercy Centre Foundation Appeal, by onemandown72 on Jul 2, 2008 21:30:29 GMT 1, My missus has suggested that a one off print of the B&W image at the top of the artc**t page, above the text explaining the money, is produced in line with the auction & auctioned off alongside. Not sure if this could be done, but did like the idea a lot as is a good image and kind of reminds people of what this about and why it has happened. She is totally disgusted at the charity being compromsied in any way shape or form

"ARTC*NT" The Mercy Centre Foundation Appeal, by Harveyn on Jul 2, 2008 21:33:47 GMT 1, CG - I have no issues at all with you comments or opinions. I would urge people to also do as you have ask and donate directly as per your link.
Also if I am honest this is my attempt to right the wrong of the last charity event. I cannot do anything for Bluebell currently as the donations are still being held but when they are released that process will be concluded. You have my word.

I think it's safe to say, not one member worth a jot holds you to blame in ANYWAY, though with your admission these are wrong reasons for getting involved with it in the first place (jmo)

Excellent question. One possible answer (which is true for me personally), is that in monetary terms I'd be hard-pushed to make a significant donation, but the sale of a print for ยฃ50-ยฃ100+ would benefit the Mercy Centre more than the piddly amount of money I can spare right now.
Also, a recognized port of call for purposes of this fund-raiser may raise better prices than someone with no selling feedback can get on ebay, especially after all the fees and costs etc. I would happily send a print off to someone and eat the postage costs, if I thought that in turn a worthwhile charitable cause would get a little bung, especially after getting screwed over by this James Golding chap.
I also feel you're being a litle cynical. Ultimately, the charity has not been given (in effect lost) a significant amount, that they may have been promised (I don't know if this is the case, but it's possible) and may even have had specific plans for after any such promise. People on here giving their art, time, money and spreading awareness, can only be positive for the Mercy Centre, WHATEVER the personal motivation for each individual. Nice one for posting that link by the way.

"ARTC*NT" The Mercy Centre Foundation Appeal, by master on Jul 2, 2008 22:32:32 GMT 1, I think your idea of charity auction is grate but concept of bidding/auctioning 4 pads at the end will be mainly focused with people who do have money / means to buy it. My suggestion will be for everyone who wants to enter to donate ยฃ10 or ยฃ 20 or any amount you think itโs fair, and at the end, you can pull 4,6, 12 or 24 (up to you) winners from the hat. This way will be far more reasonable for everyone and you will collect lots of money for good cause. Just a suggestion!!!

I LOVE this idea, a raffle type event for one of the pads, or even each page of one of the pads, while the bigger hitters get the chance to battle it out for the remaining pads in an auction style sale. Brilliant suggestion!
EDIT - Even just raffling off one pad, could produce up to 12 additional winners and create a LOT more interest from us peasants! ;D

Maybe you could scan the original pads and make up a run of books that could also be sold for ยฃ10-ยฃ20 as well as auctioning off the originals

If it does turn into a raffle or whatever I would be happy to throw in a canvas

Some good points CG, hope it hasn't upset anyone and thanks for the link, i've 'pulled the trigger' i hope a few more can help whether through Harveyn's appeal or by donating directly on the mercycentre site too.
